Last alternator I had with dead diodes never had a light come on. I had a bit under 13v charge and no other symptoms. It also made a high pitch whining sound like it was working it's ass off, but not getting much done. I guess it kind of was, depending how many diodes were bad it was running on 1/3 or 2/3 of the windings.
One of these days I really ought to modify an alternator for 3 phase power output and full field it just to see what kind of voltage it will make. It would be an interesting if most likely useless experiment.Last edited by gadget73; 12-10-2009, 08:46 PM.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Its just a 4-relay plug-in rail with a snap-on lid. Picture the fuse/relay box I installed in the 85 but only the 4 relays.
I saw another similar to it that had only 3 relays and two maxi-fuse shaped diodes in it... I was gonna nab it and wire it up with fuses in the diode spots so everything would be in one place (for a headlight relay/harness) but I broke it trying to remove itPete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

Alternator draw is fixed... with a 3G!!!
Install thread here
Now hopefully I can get back to cruisin'!
The heat doesn't work super well in this thing... it takes a while to warm up, then just barely keeps you warm. Both the 91 and the 85 can melt your face if you want them too... I'm hoping the T-stat is just stuck open...
HHHmmm this could be another good excuse to put a gauge pack in it... I'd like volts too to keep an eye on my 'new' alternator...Pete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

Don't jinx the p72!!!!
I bought a set of cheap ricer gauges from Harbor Freight, as a Christmas present to me/the p72.
I call them 'ricer' gauges because they say 'nitrous' on them :nonono: (that's the brand name) and have a little button on them... but the little button is to change the color of the LED back-lighting plus they were only $20 each, and are electronic, and come with the electric sensors. Some fancy gauges actually make you pay additional for the damn sensor!
I'm not going to attempt a p72-esque dash install just yet, I'll probably just rig up an un-finished wood bezel for them to sit on the center hump for now. i will be installing them with enough extra wiring to reach that area of the dash, when/if the time comesPete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

nitrous adds horsepower especially when written on gauges!
I just looked up the gauges and the ones I seen had like 5 different LED colors! Awesome!~David~

Core may be partially plugged if the thermostat isn't it. Backflushing may help.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
