The reg doesn't really get stressed, but the alternator has to spin at a certain rpm to make full output power. If you're at normal charging voltage at idle with the headlights, blower, and all the other stuff that is usually turned on running, honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Mine went on in an effort to make up for voltage loss problems I had with the electric fan. The idea was that if the alt spun a little faster, maybe the headlights wouldn't dim so much at idle when the fan was running. It did help, but putting the clutch fan back on helped more. I'm also running the crank underdrive.
Spacers are basically washers, only thing remotely special about it is how thick the thing is. If its some odd dimension that isn't what a washer or two stacks up to be then its special.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

An alternative option would be to pick up a 3G pulley for a '97 Ford Escort (Motorcraft GP-712). It's nearly identical in side to our stock 2G pulley. I have one I'm planning to use on my car once I get around to swapping in the 3G.

So. Dad had an order for rock auto and it happened to have a shared shipper location so I picked up the pulley mentioned above and it is just a bit larger in size as compared to the stock 2g set up.

How's the depth on that pulley? Will it seat in the same position as the 3g/2g pulleys?

That pulley is the factory 3G pulley you would find on a 1997 Ford Escort. I know of at least one Mustang guy on another forum who is running that pulley without issue (that's where I got the idea).—John
