Friend of mine has a custom built CAI on his 93 Sierra C1500 350, his mileage went from 10 to 12 in the city. Then he had the cat cut out, a Dynomax Ultraflow muffler put on and a turndown before the axle and the mileage jumped to 16 in the city which is almost as good as mine and he has a bigger motor and an automatic.
Maybe it doesn't work like that in every case but this is what i've seen first hand. I noticed a difference in mileage when my clogged cat was taken out, making the engine breathe better helps mileage in my experience. It wasn't a huge change but every bit helps. I'm not bullshitting you, that really happened.
