i can get pics tonight or tomorrow. i forget who i got them from but i can look around and see if i can find out who it was. i got them like 2 months ago so i cant really follow any warrenties.

any idea on a rough price to have new valve guides put in or to just have the heads refurbished?

that really sucks. I do wish you luck in getting whatever assistance you can in making it right.

SBF heads from the factory don't really have separate valve guides unless you were to have them machined for bronze guides or something ($$$), so depending on what exactly is broken you may be needing another core. Like I've mentioned, about $200 is what I've paid to have a set of heads rebuilt, but prices vary. That included a thorough cleaning (hot tank or bake/glassbead), Magnaflux crack checking, standard 3-angle valvejob, decking (if needed), and assembly. I'm assuming you've located a reputable local machine shop at this point? If you have a selection, you'll want to visit them and talk prices and procedures and hopefully go with a place you'll be comfortable working with.

well the lip of the guide itself that is hidden under the valve seal cracked. like part of it is missing so i need to remove the whole guide unless im confusing it with the retainer the valve sits on. i hope its that so i can get new ones and not have to replace the head.

Retainer the valve sits on? You done lost me there ... retainers are up top, holding the springs in place ... will await pics .....

i mean the retainer or, ummmm, the plate that sits around the valve guide. the head on my honda has them. theyre almost like a washer that the spring sits on intead of hte head itself. maybe theyre only on aluminum heads cause its a softer metal then iron.

i did look at work and i can get guides for the heads so i may be in luck. the only hting though is if i have enough for heads i may just buy a set of patriot heads. i rahter have those then E7 heads. weel see what happens htough cause a machine shop up hear will do my heads for 150 dollars roughly but he wants to look at the heads to guarentee the price.

ill still do pics later tonight though. well see what happens

I see, you're thinking of the pocket the spring sits in. Yeah, in stock configuration that pocket is just machined into the cast iron of the head, and no spacers of any sort are normally present unless you need to shim up an aftermarket spring to achieve its nominal installed height (and hence proper seat and open pressures).

$150 to rebuild a set of heads sounds like an excellent price .........

That breakage is interesting, though .... I wonder if it would be possible to just chamfer the inner edge of the broken area and call it good enough for a mild build? Machining that out for an aftermarket valve guide will cost a few bucks ... definitely get that thing in for an inspection so you know exactly where you stand in terms of any unexpected expenditures. And yeah, I definitely l think the idiot who packaged the heads inappropriately should pay for repair or replacement. Where'd you get these cores from, again?

yea i need to send them over to the place. what im wondering is if htat raised part of hte guide can be pressed out and a new one pressed in. like take one off of my E6 heads and put it on the E7 heads.

the only thing i can think of doing is emailing hte guy and telling him htat he fucked up but since it was like 2 months ago i doubt anything will come of it and at this point i just need to get the motor done. like ill just bore it .040" and get it done at htis point.

my dad keeps complaining about my car chilling out front of my house and all hte engine parts i got in my garage and shit. i need to get it done now.

Like I said, factory iron SBF heads don't have separate valve guides in stock configuration. Installing a separate guide will require a little custom machining.

what do you guys think of D80E-ab cylinder heads? anything different about them compared to E7 heads?

Got a set sitting in the garage. Supposed to flow OK as smog-era heads go, but the chambers are the size of the Grand Canyon. Good luck getting decent compression if you use a set! :p I'd definitely stick with an E7 or later myself.

damn. i got a set cause they were 75 bucks on ebay. eh i can have them shaved or just run higher compression pistons. they were cheaper then fixing my busted E7 heads. arent E6 heads close to the 69CC chambers that D80E heads have?

what do you mean by that? do you have any ideas on how to raise compression?
