Oh, OK .... yeah, not to rub it in, but that's why you don't buy any parts till the motor's at the shop and you know what the final specs are.

Don't quote me on this, but I *think* align honing isn't normally necessary unless the crank doesn't spin freely by hand. Sort of like paying a little extra for torque-plate honing - neither of my engines had that done either. The more experienced guys like Pirate or Mercracer will know a lot more about that stuff than I do, might want to PM one of them for details.

i should try and get a hole diameter gauge or whatever you want to call it and see if my cylenders are within spec and save the trip to the machine shop. i doubt i need to have the mains line bored though but i know what youre saying, i just thought id mention it.

today i got the motor apart down to to nothing. i just need to get the crank pulley and balancer off the crank and pull the crank out. the bearings were in good shaoe when i pulled them out so i know its not worn down too bad. i may luck out and just have to hone the cylenders.

i think ill probably paint the motor too and try to spiff it up too. eh well see what happens.

Paint? Nah.... I recommend taking your freshly baked and glass-beaded block and heads and just letting 'em rust.

today i got the rest of the motor apart and started de-gunking everything. ive already used like 2.5 cans of engine degreaser on just the block, timing cover and crank pulley.

tomorrow i hope to get the new pistons pressed on and get hte bottom half of the motor together and paint it or something. then i need to clean out the enigne bay and everything.

i didnt think itd be as much work as it is but hey, at least im learning something and pissing off my dad at hte same time :banana:

dont waste your time with the canned aerosol engine degreaser........get a gallon jug of purple power or castrol super clean

Some of those spray-can degreasers work damn good, though. Don't they contain petroleum-based solvents or something?

so this may be a stupid question but is htere a way to press/ get the wrist pins out of the pistons without using a press? id like to try and do it myslef but i dont want to do anything stupid and ruin the connecting rods or the pistons. maybe im hoping for too much. any ideas or tips?

I'd actually not thought about that much. I guess you can always try a piece of pipe and a BFH, but it'd be interesting to see what carnage ensues. Pretty sure machinists install press-fit pins by heating the rod so the hole expands ... personally, I wouldn't try that at home since it's probably easy to damage the rods if they're heated unevenly or heated too much. Yeah, I'd definitely pay the $6 or so a hole to make sure it's done right and have someone experienced be able to look 'em over and Magnaflux them at the same time.

well the newest set back is now the E7 heads i got. the dude shipped htem in just a box so one valve htat i know of is bent and another just broke off and broke one of hte guides in the process.

so now i need to either take the heads to a machine shop and have them fix them up or i just buy a fresh set of heads since im not getting it done by the end of may.

i did take one of my new pistons and fit it in the cylenders without rings on it and the thing never wriggled so i think theyre ok but i may still have them checked out to make sure.

Dang, that sucks. What's your seller have to say about it?

At least I think the valves interchange between the E6 and E7 heads .... you can yank a valve from your old heads to check that out. Broken guide could be a much bigger problem, though. Got pics?
