Yeah, I actually drilled an extra hole in my engine hoist so that I can set an engine down several inches forward of the correct position, then lengthen the arm and scooch it back into place without removing the bumper.

    Sounds like you're doing good!

Sounds like your project is going about like these things normally go. It all seems so simple until you go to do it and then you have to deal with all kinds of stupid little problems here and there that make it take forever. Don't feel bad- it happens to the best of us.

          DAMN
          DAMN
          DAMN

so now its like 330 here and i have to work at 7 till 5 and think how my car wont start and how im dead tired in the morning and shiz. course it is mornign so DAMN

Eh, probably just bad contact at the battery cables. Don't know how many times I've had that happen after I was too lazy to tighten the cable ends. In such situations, I often throw my charger on the car for a short period just for good measure.

well i forgot to put a ground wire on the motor so i bet its that. any way that the lack of certain sensors could keep it form starting or cause it to run poorly?

              Comment

Shouldn't. All you need is fuel to the carb and +12V to the ignition. One thing to consider is that if you're piggybacking certain segments of the factory wiring, the ignition may not be energized during cranking and you'll have to take a voltmeter and make sure you have a way to do that. On the P72 I just bought I was able to do it at least temporarily just by wiring together the hot-in-Start and hot-in-Run wires from the oblong connector the original Duraspark module would have hooked to, took me about a half hour or so. The Colony Park has a ridiculous setup using three relays on the passenger-side inner fender that does the same thing with all custom wiring that I hope to streamline somewhat one of these days.

well i hooked the +12 to the pink/green wire that went to the plug for the origional coil. course i dont know if its looking for a tach signal though. i may just run it to an empty fuse slot or to the positive side of the fender solenoid.

my problem now is that i get nothign when i turn the key. at first i got a click but now i get nothing. so im wondering if my starter is bad. ill have to pull it out tomorrow and see if its bad. once i figure that out i can see if i got the distributer wired properly. the funny thing is i dont even here the fuel pump trying to prime the system. so at this point im lost with what could be hte problem

Start with the basics, dude, start with with the basics. Like I said, I've been momentarily stumped by dumb stuff like poor contact at the battery a number of times.

well i tested my starter and it came out to be fine. so now it must be a wireing thing or something like that. i kinda think i didnt tighten the stater bolts enough though. well see what happens

well my car is bugging the crap out of me. but you can read bout it in the 5.0/5.8 section

well my car runs but i still have some bugs to work out. i have a couple plugs on the coolant part of my intake manifold that are leaking and my idle is way too high. i disconnected the hose for vacume advance and my idle dropped a lot so i know i need to change the tension on that. i have an hei style distributer so i need to knwo how to adjust that. its a bunch of little things that need to be tinkered with but im so close to driving the thing i can taste it. hehehe

heres a pic of the motor in the car

That looks sweet!!! When I see that, I want to spend all available money to build a 5.0L for my mom's CV.

                              Pic looks nice!

What's this about tension? I'd hold off on trying to tune the vacuum advance until you've done some time with the timing light and know exactly what's going on. Actually, Dave, I think it is, doesn't recommend running vacuum advance on any non-EGR car, and if nothing else it definitely simplifies tuning the spark advance curve. 10-15 degrees initial with 32 to 38ish total with everything in by about 3k RPM seems to be the usual rule of thumb, and it's working great for me so far (the P72 is currently running 12-14 inital plus 20 centrifugal and light advance springs from Mr. Gasket Co.).

Unless the idle is way high (i.e. a lot over 1000rpm), I'd wait on worrying too much about the idle speed itself until you're confident the idle mixture and initial timing are correct. Then you adjust the idle speed to the desired RPM and recheck the idle mixture.

well to get the idle to go down i need to press down on the throttle linkage with my finger, so i know the idle screw is too tight and needs to be backed off.

also the thing wants to hover at 2k on its own but once i disconnected the vacume line to the vacume advance it idled fine so now im wondering if eihter hte slightest tension in the throttle is making it idle too high and causeing hte vacume advance to kick in?

hopefully tomorrow i can mess with the carb settings and see what i can do wiht it.

all i know is htat holley says not to mess with the mixture screws on hte fuel bowls so im not gonna touch them at all unless i absolutely have to. i guess ill have to let you guys know how it goes.
