There should be a setscrew that adjusts the speed of the idle on the choke cam.

Well, aside from everything ...... I guess it's always possible that I tend not to tighten the nuts down enough.

timing initial and total can be read from spark plugs as well as fuel mixture at cruse floored and idle. Each leaves its mark. Preigniton no mater how sever or mild can also be read as well as proper spark gap. Heat range can also be determined. All these things leave teltale indicators.

Wow, sounds like you've got the spark-plug-reading thing pretty much down! Not that that's surprising based on your experience, it's just a bigger deal to a comparative n00b like me. Don't suppose we could talk you into holding a little online spark plug clinic where we all post pics of our sparkers and you tell us how our engines are all running like garbage?

well, he's OLD and tunes carbs.... That's how it was done in the good old musclecar days. And still done, because it works.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound so flippant about useful experience from the older days. I just appreciate from time to time being reminded of some of the very basic things that I still don't know much about!

There are some books by HP that are about Holley carbs.

And look in almost any good auto book it will show you how to "read" any spark plug ..and same with a Vacuum gage the vacuum gage is extremely usefull..IF you know how to read it.

What he said - fast idle ain't controlled directly by the choke, yer buddy leaned out the mixture by slightly opening the choke flapper, but he did nothing about the engine speed - find the fast-idle cam (probably behind the choke's coil), find the screw that contacts with the cam, back screw out some. As I said my fast-fast idle is about 1600rpms, regular-fast idle is like 1300rpms, regular idle at 900 in park, pretty much by the book really.

Yep, I got nice and steady needle, currently at 17" at 900rpm idle, cruise is 13-14", hardly ever drop lower than 10" upon light accel. I did however just swap the vacuum advance back to manifold, will see how it runs on the way back from work, and tonight I'm gonna select the better.

What are your criteria for choosing ported or manifold vacuum for the vacuum advance? Right now I'm just using whichever once keeps it at baseline at idle and blips the timing forward when you blip the throttle - the other one advances the timing at idle somewhat and then when you goose the gas it backs off a few degrees before it starts advancing again.
