HELP rear QP cancer :(

I noticed this today... I have been worried about this bubbly spot and it recently came through (yes all the way through).




There is also rust on the underside of the crap chrome trim, and I saw some from the inside down there when I re-did the trunk carpet. At that time, I tried to sand and I just covered it with rubber undercoat spray... not a fix I know.



I want to remove the trim to expose whats underneath, and Im a little scared. but Im going to do it, becuase if I stall it will just get worse, and I want to do something while its still unnatrually warm here.
Any one removed this trim before? I see two screws on the fender well, but how does it come out from there? Does it slide off? will I need to take the wheel off? I dont plan to put it back on, so I dont care if it gets damaged.

What do I do for a temporary hold back, and for a more permanent fix? ( I dont care what it looks like, white primer is becoming more and more of a color on this thing.

How do you patch the hole??? I am sad

there will be 2 clips behind it. u got to use somethin to pry it off from the top of the trim.

and oh ya! it aint hard to do, the clips dont hod the molding on tight.
i replaced all the molding on this car in my sig...if u need tips jus ask!

yeah the moulding came off easy, after the screws were out, it slides toward the front of the car about two inches and it relases... the clips come off easy too. Just two little pegs poking out leftover. Looks like it wouldn't look too bad as-is, Im thinking about taking it all off.

Now for the bad news

To bad you weren't closer, I would be more then glad to fix it for you. I love this sort of stuff. I fucking hate rust. Good luck with the fix. :hotwrench:

how about a rundown on what you would do??

I have the black lower panels, under this chrome stuff in the middle.

heres the damage... Im going to buy mudflaps to keep water fron getting kicked up in there... should I put the trim back on the help avoid that? could I grind it down and put that metallic tape on it for a temporary hole covering??

Ya that is alittle more then it looked like. If it is rusted all the way through grinding down the rust won't help. I would just put on a couple of coats of rust converter on it and cover it back up until you can cut it off and put on a patch panel. It always thought on the boxes that metal stripping would hide rust if you got it. If I were you I would pull all that stuff off and look. I'm sorry to break it to ya but if there is rust there I would image there will be more rust hiding under that metal stripping. If you got that chrome trim over the wheel wells I would take that off too. More or likely there will be rust under those. Just try to stop it in its tracks so you don't have to completely have to replace the hole panels.

The best bet would be to cut out the affected area and weld in a new panel, of course the seams of the welded panel would need to be treated for rust prevention too because they are prone to rusting. What I would do if you dont have access to a welder is.....

1- knock any loose rusty metal away from the hole.
2- grind down the metal on the door all around the hole and anywhere else nearby thats rusty.
3- get some of those adhesive metal patch screens from auto-zone and stick em in behind the hole, or stick some fiberglass mat to the inside of the hole.
4- get some heavy duty fiberglass filler like USP Long N Strong (tigerhair should work too), and spread a layer across the hole. Long N Strong fills holes like crazy, and it's really strong once it dries. It also inhibits rust.
5- Once it's built up a little higher than the hole, sand it down, with some really heavy grit paper (this shit is tough!)
6- follow it up with some lightweight filler if you can get it smooth enough with the long n strong, then once it's straight, prime it!

Thats how i'd do it if I were you, but if you dont wanna use bone on your car, weld in a panel.

Oh yeah!

I'd also be sure to coat the inside of the lower door skin with some type of rustproofing paint, like POR-15, or Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator. This will keep the rust inside the door from causing more holes on the outside.

the idea of cutting and welding make me nervous... I do have acess to a welder but I know how thin this metal is and anytime Ive practiced welding stuff this thin I burned it through!

Im going to use my auto zone gift card to get a quart of bondo and a quart of fiberglass (if they have the stuff) and some bodywork supplies.
Im gonna try to take care of this saturday... wish me luck!

ok here we go:

supplies cost under $45



got rid of all the booshit with a stripper disc and snipped out all the raggety edges



stuff with gorrila hair and cover with bondo, sand, re-apply bondo as needed (man that gorilla hair will get you HIIIIGH!!!)



coat of primer to make it purty



look at that! I used the crappy cam, it makes it look so much nicer than it is... See anything else different?



now the sadness
I didnt feel like I had the time at the shop to get into it from the backside... i didnt want to keep the guys there any later than they were allready... so I just stuffed the ground out holes and filled them. If water still getting in the trunk this will come back soon... so I am going to ored some of that POR stuff and slather it all over the rust from the backside (inside the trunk well)
Then by the time it comes back, hopefully I will be rich enough to take it to a body shop!

You did do some good work. So you didn't get to put a rust converter on it or a perventitive on it?

nope... well the gorilla hair is supposed to be "rust inhibitive" i think , but yeah the back side it just waitin to get wet and start rusting again.
