    Car got side swiped.

    Hey guys!

I was on the Long Island Expressway on exit 19 in New York City when those stupid street racers clipped my car. They drove in between the lanes and another and took off my mirror, and damaged the other woman’s mirror next to me (she was in the lane to the left of me).

The driver continued racing with his friends and and never stopped (which isn’t a surprise).

Me and the woman obviously pulled over and we assessed the damages and she said she’s not going to bother going through insurance as well since the glass part is the only thing that broke and needs to be replaced (hers folded outward)

Mine on the other hand- broken glass& mirror broke off completely at the folding mechanism

I went to junk yards and they only have different colored ones (black, burgundy, gold, green), no silver frost.

Can the colored piece of the mirror come off? I was able to retrieve the mirror

Yeah, you can swap the mirror caps. If your cap is still good, you shouldn't have any problems switching it to a replacement mirror assembly. There's some small tabs at the back you can get at by moving the mirror to the extreme down position and lifting up the tabs with a screwdriver while pulling the cap away from the rest of the mirror body.

Yeah they can be swapped. Though just beware of the differences between the years, not all are the same.

That's what you call them - couldn't think of the name.

They are seriously out of hand here in NYC, and those god damn bikers/quads.

It's all fine on Long Island, but when you get into Queens, forget about it!

Luckily the damage wasn't too bad. I got a non heated electric mirror from a junk yard and had it installed from a body shop. Unfortunately the electric motor doesn't work, but I'm not sure if it's because it wasn't installed correctly, or if the piece itself didn't work.... I'm trying to keep this car as mint condition as possible till I sell this and buy a cheap used hybrid for like $12,000 (Prius). Going to miss this boat!

Do not get in a rush to sell your reliable car. The Prius might be cheap to operate however wait until you have to replace things like the battery ! There goes any savings for the next couple of years.

The battery is under factory warranty until 150,000 miles/ or 10 years. I am eyeing a 2013 right now with about 80k Miles.

                Benefits are:

                - I'll be saving about $1,200 per year in gas alone.

-Has a backup camera (standard), Bluetooth, xm radio, and premium speakers included. The backup camera is a god send in parallel parking, no need to tap bumpers anymore!

-Clean pass (HOV lane access during rush hour in New York) so that saves A LOT of time from avoiding some traffic.

-Additional savings from New York City tolls for having a clean pass(the savings are up to $3 each way!)

My mercury now has 106k miles and it's been giving me a ton of issues with its suspension (I'm going through shock absorbers every year). I can't avoid potholes in this boat. I have OEM police shocks and I still don't feel comfortable swerving around potholes on the parkways. Also, the tranny acts a little funny at times during longer drives (even after my transmission was serviced). I know that I will obviously have similar issues with the Prius if I hit potholes, but I feel it would be more easy to avoid them.

I was considering on leasing so not worry about suspension issues from our roads, but I drive WAY too much to even lease (18k miles per year). It's a shame since I would consider if I drove 12k/yr, but .15 cents extra per mile after 12/yrk adds up.

I loved my mercury grand marquis, I will miss it dearly, but it's time for something more efficient :'(

Prius battery’s aren’t that expensive. What really helps is that you can replace only the bad cells rather than the entire pack. It’s still not cheap (I think I’ve heard 1200 for reman cells) but, not awful considering what shops will charge for suspension jobs.

Life is too short to drive boring cars. We pay 0 a month to own any car in our fleet, only maintenance and routine fluid changes which you'd have to do on any vehicle. Gas is in our opinion negligible, since at this point to get anything "better" on it would cost more money and the difference in said MPG would take years to add up to anything significant based on our calculations. Plus, they're just not fun. I've thought about a 3.8 powered 5 speed 1998 Rustang but like always, the minute I start to warm up to a particular car is the minute they go up in value. Not cool.

To be completely honest, I don't think the Grand Marquis isn't much of a toy either (lol). It's just way too heavy... I thought stiffer shocks would help, but it doesn't.. it's a great car; handled the roads here nicely besides going through suspension parts like crazy, but the pros out weigh the cons.

Where do you own your fleet?

It beats a Prius lol. Roomier and more amenities.

Roseville, Michigan. Our driveway and one straggler in the street. Fleet just downsized by one though, got rid of the '69 Plymouth. Glad that's gone.

                          What!? You sold the Plymouth?
I figured you would keep that car forever. Didn't have that car since high school or something?

Yes, sir. That ship has sailed.
I did too, certainly the one car I owned the longest, yet also the one I drove the least. I looked back on all the pics I had with it, the fun I had in it and the friendship that was forged (and now practically lost) over that car.. Good times, but it was just starting to get raggedy to me and I lost motivation to keep it up mechanically or bring it back body wise. Also, long drives ended up causing back & neck pain that took up to 2 days to go away. That's really what kept me out of the driver's seat this year and so over the past couple of months as it sat in the driveway I kicked around the idea of selling it. Plus, it being a carburetor coupled with sitting it would like to gum up and stick the float from time to time and that's annoying.. In the time I was kicking around selling it, our turd of a K1500 said it wanted a new engine so seeing as we had more money into that then we could get out of it I had a "new" used motor put in it. PO pulled a fast one on me by putting a new plug in the cylinder with a burnt valve so it ran fine during the test drive and for about 300 miles after we bought it. Learn from my stupidity by putting a piece of paper or napkin over the tailpipe, if it gets sucked in, she's burnt a valve. Also, pull a damn spark plug... Anyway, truck is great now but essentially all the money from the sale of the Plymouth financed the engine in the truck. Which is ok since we drive that truck more than the Plymouth and it's more versatile.

That's another issue I had. The size isn't good for driving down residential roads in Queens, they are EXTREMELY tight when cars are parked on each side and have someone else driving down the road, or is double parked. Also parallel parking is a bitch.
