Bumper Rust question (inside of bumper)

First thing. Did they make Grand Marquis bumpers out of different materials? The one I wrecked is significantly heavier than the one I pulled of a Colony Park. Also the colony park has almost no rust on the inside but the outside surface is clearly marred more.

So one of questions is, what difference does the material of the bumper make. Obviously the are both metal.

I want to sand down the internals of the bumper and the apply a nice undercoat no stop or limit rust. When sanding, will I be safe sanding down enough to clearly remove the rust or is there an acid chemical I will need to apply to it. I already have the two pieces apart.

A CP in one of the local yards around here? Which yard?

You're talking about the front bumper right? A rear CP bumper would be different design all together (although it might work). So you must be replacing the front bumper on your 1987 Grand Marquis.

My understanding is anything pre '88 all had steel bumpers (I may be wrong), while '88+ (I think) have aluminum bumpers. I know my '89 MGM must have an aluminum front bumper because it was super light when I took it off a couple weekends ago.

Parts Galore on Telegraph is where it is. Maroon in color. I think it was an 85.

Yeah front bumper. Everything looks identical just the difference in weight. It must be aluminum because the difference in weight is noticeable

I'll keep my eyes open. 8 Mile parts Galore has two Boxes there with bumpers still. In headed up today I'll get some pics of them. However I might steel one if the rust hasn't hit the outside yet

You're looking for steel bumpers? Or did you mean you're looking for a set of steel wheels?

Bumpers. I just feel they'd hold up to low speed impact better than ally-uhm-in-um.

The difference is steel vs aluminum as you said. For the most part, pre 88 wagons got aluminum and sedans got steel. Post 87 box is the aluminum on the wagons, sedans were a 50/50 mix from what I've seen. I know the Ford front tag holder is different on aluminum vs steel bumpers on the later bumpers.

Not really sure the steel are enough stronger to worry over. They have a steel under-brace anyway. I went aluminum because I found a set that weren't rotted out and were actually in good shape. The aluminum ones unfortunately de-laminate when the aluminum corrodes under the chrome, which looks horrible in a different sort of way.

Yep, I can see this happening on Ashley's TC. Aluminum corrodes, just not as ugly of a color like iron or steel. Guess I won't bother with it then.

wait till it starts to blister under the chrome or the chrome cracks through and you get sheets peeling away from it.

That's what I'm trying to prevent! They did a good job on the undercoat but he actual bumpers backside is starting because it did t get coated

By the way it split on impact, i'd say the one on my '90 was definitely aluminum, so this seems to add up.

Oh I'd say her bumper is ripe for harvest then. Blisters are starting around the bottom edges. Rest of car is non rusty thanks to liberal amounts of oil though.
