    Underbody coating

What is the coating on the bottom of the trunk, floor...?

Epoxy? Maybe it's the age of the car, but it feels similar to a paper egg carton texture.

they used a foam like sealer on all the trunk seams. not sure what the paint is they used in the trunk, it seemed to hold up tho, at least in my cars.
i spray eastwood undercoating on the inside of the trunk floor when i'm making a trunk look nice after 30 yrs of hauling stuff.

Mine are just gray paint (probably an epoxy primer?) on the bottom side and body color on top.

Probably +30 years. It sorta taps like a tough paper coating. Like bed lining.

The gray paint is Ecoat, probably BASF. Good ole leaded ecoat over zinc phosphate pretreatment. Doesn't get any better than that, not even by today's standards. Matter of fact, the stuff they're using today is too eco friendly to be any good.

That's the trunk floor. The gas tank is forward of the trunk above the rear axle.

Is this the Ecoat zinc stuff?

Nope, dat be the undercoating. Although you can see it in a few of those spots where the undercoating has chipped off. Ecoat would be a medium gray of sorts and would have streaks/runs on anything but the class "A" sides. For a good look at the Ecoat you can pull up the carpet in the trunk or look at the bracing between where the spare tire sits and rear package tray.

Not sure what it is exactly but if I had to take a stab at it I'd say it's a rubberized epoxy coating. You can probably find similar stuff in rattle cans at your local auto parts stores. I personally do not believe in undercoating. As you can see from all the flaky areas the adhesion wasn't great and so water/moisture/salt will get in there & get trapped leading to rot. Your car most likely didn't see much salt spray despite having that done to it, which is why it is still pretty clean. IMO that stuff is great for garage queens but for stuff that is going to see salt & moisture mix, oil is your friend.

Maybe just lucky whoever had the car before I bought it in 93. Here on Long Island they lay down the salt heavier than sand, and I used the car for college commute.

LoL. Yeah it was probably a garage queen or they didn't like to drive it in the weather because it "handled bad" as I've heard old people put it. It does help against the flash rusting from humid areas though. Not much is a match for icky salt.
