    metal trim molding, coated?

    Hi,

Is the trim on the car clear coated from the factory?

If the door molding is flexed a bit, I see in spots tiny surface cracks appear.

Can this be burned off in a dipping process?

    Thx

I believe it is anodized. Oven cleaner supposedly will eat it off, but the aluminum very rapidly goes to shit if you do not re-coat it with something.

Also, aluminum itself cracks very easily if you bend it, so you may just be seeing the metal deforming.

It is anodized. The coating cracks because it's very brittle.

They should have used stainless steel.

I wish I knew how to refinish that stuff. It gets cloudy and if you polish it, it gets worse in a short amount of time.

You have to strip it all and re-anodize it.

Some people have suggested stripping it all, polishing it all out and applying a product called "shark hide" to it.

Just leaving everything as is and calling it good enough.

I hit mine lightly with metal polish. Its still a bit hazy but short of doing a lot of extra work there is nothing to be done about it.

You can rub transmission fluid on it to make the cloudiness go away... That's a Good way to use up slick 50 actually.

There are shops that restore it but it's not cheap. It would probably be cheaper to get some NOS trim. It's around for the most part but sometimes hard to find. Internet has made that so much easier.

Personally obtaining some Sulphuric acid and juicing it with 15A electrodes sounds fun.
