I know guys used to make their own by carefully grinding away the sidewall to expose the white banding underneath. I don't think that would work with today's tires.

Back from the shop. Excuse everything being filthy:

The left front wheel is super glossy since the clear coat didn't do the orange peel like the others. The rest will get wet-sanded in a few days along with minor touch up around the wheel lip since some got chipped, but I expect as much when doing a rattle can job. Some might say this is what a Mercury police package could have looked like should one have actually existed in the '90s.

The red has been gone for a few months. I could never run the red ones without trim rings because of how eaten the paint was from the pieces that dig in to grip the rim. Made me a little sad since I really liked that look. It was something different. Maybe someday, but not now. I'd like to media blast the wheels if I was going body color again; there's too many overlayed coats of paint. Its factory black, then the primer, red, clear, primer, black, and clear.

Pretty cool man! Weren't those powered by Ford engines or did people swap them in? When I was younger a guy in the neighborhood had one, a dark pewter/gold color and it just sat there, was nice back then but if storage conditions never changed then it's faded and shot to hell by now. That's how I recognized yours though.

The real ones were powered by Studebaker engines. The later ones were sort of a kit car, I think those ran Chevy engines. I think '64 was the last model year, though they went out of production in 1963. The leftovers were re-titled as a '64. Pretty rare to have an original, especially the supercharged version.

Derek, no FoMoCo engines....after Studebaker folded nate Altman a large Stude dealer purchased all the rights to the car......and began to sell the Avanti 2....starting in late 1965....since Stude closed their engine foundry, a new engine was needed....and they choose a Chevy 327/300...very long story as to what happened for the next 40 years....do a web search...tons of info on the car....Click image for larger version

The car in the ad with the swingin' 60's ladies is exactly like the one I remember from long ago.

I think Derek got confused by the same thing that confused me for a very long time. That being that the engines in these were 289CI in displacement. I just took for granted it was a Ford motor until I did some reading much later on. They were a wild-looking car at the time and I still do a double-take whenever I see one. Very cool toploader.
