Yep, that A-pillar looks rotten. If the dude puts in patch panels how will he treat the underside of that metal? Moisture is somehow getting in there and if the underside of those patch panels are left bare the rot will come right back. My pops hates rust yet drives his car through salt and expects it to stay pristine. When he has the Mk. VII it had started to rust at the lower door edges and driver's side of the decklid had crust showing. He had the decklid fixed and while the job looked good when it was done, some 2-3 years later it was looking ripe again. That dude claimed to have cut the cancer out and replaced it with fresh metal yet the seams looked factory so it was anybody's guess what he actually did.

I greatly appreciate everybody's ideas, suggestions!.......the problem is that this car will not be put into a garage, and will continue to sit outside in the pollution laced air of the NYC metro area!........Tom, to fully paint this car now would be a fools mission as they say........the winter snows with all the damn SALT over all the roads!!.......then there is the vinyl top............who knows what is on the bottom of that padding...........?? Derek you are correct in all you say........the only true way to attack that pass side A pillar is to take out the windshield, moldings etc..........then the doors would have to come off to weld in new corners as the rust has eaten through the welded lips of both doors.......so one could easily drop 10-15K on this car.........for what...........to sit on the street in NYC........??? I love the car , and if the body work will last me three years, then I will see about doing it again.........or maybe look for another Tudor that used to live in Arizona, NM, or Ca.........even in the condition she is in........I always get kind comments from the inhabitants in my "hood" about the car........and damn the interior is MINT, and she rides so nice!!!........especially since I put in the four new KYB shocks and new MooG Idler ArmLast edited by Toploader; 10-13-2015, 10:01 PM.

If this was me and the interior was mint & I liked the color I'd be tempted to find a sun blistered box from Arizona or some other place outwest, bring it back, swap all of it out and then start to get it salty. No need to waste money fixing a salty car unless it has some supreme sentimental value or monetary value, especially if it will continue to see the nastiness. Bottom line, start looking into/saving for a new whip!1985 LTD Crown Victoria - SOLD

NYC must be like Detroit then. It seems all cars that live within that city age at least 5x faster than those in the suburbs. I've seen 3 year old cars with dents, duct tape & bags over broken windows & mis matched tires.1985 LTD Crown Victoria - SOLD

Tom you are so so correct!......not only natures 'elements' but just the sheer amount of people, delivery trucks, repair vehicles, all buzzing around.......women getting out of taxis and allowing the door of the cab to slam against parked cars....the list is endless!! Yes, one can rent garage space here......but the average price for a spot in my area is $800.00 per month, plus 27% NYC parking tax! Add to this the winter and all the salt the city utilizes, and get this....when it snows heavy the plows push the street snow to the street curbs, guess what is at the curbs??....all the cars with three feet or more of snow piled against the sides.....LOL.....many winters the car remains buried till the spring thaw, no sheet!Originally posted by Mainemantom View PostI wish you the best in making your Merc last the best way you know how. That is all you can do when parking in the streets of NYC. It does not matter what you drive, if it stays outside, it will die a slow death.

Seems someone in town dropped a dime on the fellow who is doing the body work.............he had set up his two car garage as a mini shop to do his moonlight jobs..............the town supervisor came down banged on his door and read him the riot act...........got to love beuro-rats.......anyway the car will be worked on after hours in the FoMoCo dealer body shop he works in.......man I had no idea paint was so expensive.............one qt cost me $100.00:-(...........he told me he will use POR-15 in all the places that need it, as opposed to just 'bondo'......A pillar area will be cut out and a new piece of metal tacked in, and finished.Last edited by Toploader; 10-22-2015, 05:53 PM.

POR-15 supposedly prevents moisture & oxygen from further rusting out affected areas but I'm not sure if that is really the case. Bondo or any other filler won't do dick in terms of sealing out the elements. In fact, next time you're at a bone yard and you see a limo or hearse, just start chipping away at any bondo you see, chances are there is over 1/2 an inch of it (LOL) and underneath is scabby steel. ::shiver:: Again, if the underside of any patch work done isn't treated it will just rot from the inside out and do it at an alarming rate.1985 LTD Crown Victoria - SOLD
