New Jersey isn't too bad if you wash your car after a snow storm. We don't get hit with too much bad weather. My MGM is still pretty much rust free and it has spent it's entire life outside. If I lived in the rust belt, I'd never own a car that was more than a few years old.

I store my cars each winter. They all have some rust but nothing severe that prevents them from passing inspection.

If you live in the rust belt stuff rust out. Some cars do better than others, but it's only a matter of time.

My 40 year old truck is from Eugene, OR, where they get plenty of snow. No rust. None. Not a spec.

Plenty of sand on the roads, but no salt, at least back when it was used as a truck.

Many times I have talked about "oiling" a car, and I know folks here are familiar with it. I did my Dodge, I did my Crown Vics, and I will be doing this VW. Doors, crossmembers, all body seams, the cab corners (on the truck), etc. If you do it even every 3rd year (I do it every other), it will be rust free for years. My Dodge was imammculate underneath when I powerwashed it before selling, and was one of the few local 3rd gens that had mileage, but no rot over the rear wheels.

Takes less than an hour with a decent jack, stands a roll of masking tape, and agricultural sprayer, and a gallon of drain oil.

The salt is bad, the new liquid evil brine spray is just horrible though.

NJ doesn't get so much snow because we get punished enough by our politicians. No need to add insult to injury.

I am just now seeing the beginnings of rust belt damage to the Subaru. It is Ziebarted. It has to be done every year. The owner of the shop is such an ass that I have not done it every year. As others have said, if moisture gets under the coating it useless. I saw a Subaru that was having the whole sub frame replaced with a used one from AZ. Owner could not afford a good used or car. Hate to see the bill on that job.

I'm getting it on the bottom of the doors of my '89 Park Avenue... Sanded it all down and coated it with POR15 on one side, Rust Encapsulator on the other... We'll see which is better after winter. I'll be spraying a fresh coat of undercoating under it this week too.

I really do need to put some old oil down through the doors and fenders though... I have enough of it laying around!

Get that oil on/in there, it will make you feel good lol. I get super greasy any time I'm under my car but I never get upset because it sure beats rust dust in your eye and tetanus from splitting your hands open on rusty crap at the scrap yards. I'm at the point where I just might bring goggles with me to those places.

I found grade AAA top soil in spots rusting up. I kicked it out with a driver.
