    Cerium Oxide

How many of you are familiar with cerium oxide?

It is used to polish glass, and stones. I ordered some from ebay, in order to rid my windshield of small scratch marks that affected visibility when sunlight or headlights hit it. I have to say, it works! It will never look like a new windshield, but boy is it a world of difference from how it was.

Anyone thinking about replacing their windshield, or annoyed by the swirly scratches from years of use on their windshield, should think about getting some. Cost me $16 for the cerium oxide, and $15 for some buffing wheels that attach to a drill. It takes some time and elbow grease, and it's messy, but worth it!

I got it from gordons glass co on ebay, and I was impressed by the quality of it, very fine with no larger chunks that could cause additional scratches. Unfortunately it's hard to show the difference with pictures.

Hope this helps someone out, I was very pleased to learn of this stuff!

How do you work with it, dampen the buffing pad and make the cerium oxide into a sort of mud that you polish with?

I wonder how well it works on softer materials like plastic.

Mix it into a slurry, thinner than a "mud" and buff it with the pad. You have to make sure it doesn't dry though- it could scratch the glass up and overheat the pad. I sprinkle it on with my hand, but a lot of people recommend using a spray bottle. I can try it on plastic, i imagine it might be too harsh though.
