    Michigan front side window legal tint example

    According to Michigan tint law, you can only tint the top 4 inches of the front side windows. I don't believe I've ever seen a car in Michigan with this 4" strip of tint. They're either fully tinted or not tinted at all.

    I'm wanting to tint my windows, but I'm also wanting it to be legal. I think a 4 inch strip would look strange, but I don't know for sure, I've never seen it. Anyone have an example they could post? I see most people tint the whole window, but I'd be worried about being pulled over for it.

    Any chance your dr will give you a scrip for tint since you have sensitive eyes or something? Most states allow exceptions for medical reasons. Also, it depends how dark things are and how much of a pain your police are. Most of the time if its not really obviously dark and you don't give them a reason to pull you over, you can get by with it. Just accept that if you don't have legal tint, you're probably getting a ticket for it if they let you off for speeding or something.

      I see cars all the time that have tint so dark you can't see if anyone is driving. Seems like the po-po don't care. There is a Mercedes that parks at the apartments across the street that has windows just as black as the car.
      1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

        NJ is a no front window tint state. I had my 89 MGM set up for the darkest I could go in the rear and the front was several shades lighter. Never had a problem.

            This is from michigan.gov site: " The law that covers window applications is MCL 257.709 . The use of tinting is limited to the rear side windows, the rear window if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides, and the top 4 inches of the front side windows. There is a limited exception for medical necessity with a doctor's prescription, which allows for tinting to be applied to the front side windows as well. Michigan does not have a specification for the darkness of the window application, but does prohibit applications with a solar reflectivity greater than 35%."

            I've re-read this many times because I've never seen a car in Michigan with just 4" of tint on the front side windows.

              As he quoted in his reply from the michigan.gov site this is an actual Michigan law, but the windshield is the only example I can think of where tint is only applied to the upper few inches.
              I also have never seen a car in MI that actually follows the law when it comes to tinting the front windows.

              In fact there was an unrelated news report recently showing someone getting out of (or into) their Detroit City owned vehicle which had illegal (in MI) tint on the front windows. The news story was completely unrelated to the vehicle but viewers contacted the news station and turned it into a big deal.

              I have also heard of people getting pulled over for the illegal tint with a story along the lines of since the vehicle was purchased out of state with the tint already on then they were let go. I can't confirm how true any of that story is though.

                I'm not saying it's right, but if it's a government owned vehicle, it's probably "exempt". Exactly the same as when cops speed for no reason.

                  Not Michigan but an anecdote from my experience. My friend and I were driving down to Florida and he got a pretty pricey ticket in Virginia when a cop saw tints on the car on I-95. But then again, I've heard Virginia cops or pretty douchy and pull over almost everyone for any reason on I-95... so there's that too.

                    Some states (VA is one) target out of state drivers for this stuff. They know the people are not likely to show up to plead it in court, so its basically a guaranteed money thing.

                      Yea, that's retarded lol! Maybe talk to some tint shops and see what they say? I myself would just tint the whole window. I don't know how dark you wanna go but I'd suggest not going crazy so it's not a red flag. That's why I just have 35% all around, the legal limit in this crooked ass city.

                        Virginia state police are rough. Last time in Va we had a passenger who was getting irritated that I was going the speed limit. I told him to watch traffic. No sooner than I said that a Va State Police pulled over the car just passing me. The passenger shut up fast.
                        Illegal window tinting is just seed to pull you over. Chances are the LE will find something else. Why chance it.

                          Typically city cops dont have the meters to see if the windows are tinted. State/sheriffs usually do. If you do a lot of interstate driving, I would say to tint it light enough that the cop can still see you driving the vehicle. Thats what they care about.

                            I have the same eye problem and personally just wear sunglasses (actually $6 smoke-lens safety glasses but they're stylish as hell), but you could also get some smoke-tinted wind deflectors in place of window tint. Just an idea.

                              In Ca many people went around the tint law by buying removable tinting for the windows. If you got pulled over, just show the officer that the tint comes off. It comes off and goes back on in seconds. You would have to look at the wording of the vehicle code section in your state to see if it would work.
