Dear Panthers, I hesitate to correct the Great Derek but antique car insurance - like Haggerty -has limits designed for show cars: "Our policy allows you to use your collector vehicle for club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and even occasional pleasure driving — it just can't be your daily driver"

Many insurance companies don't offer collision for cars more than 25 years old - regardless of the condition, modifications, etc and of them, few will cover more than the blue book value. For a time I had "Stated value" insurance but my wife got a couple tickets in another car and I got cancelled. I do keep records of every modification in the hope that if I do get in an accident and the other driver is at fault I can sue for the actual value of the car. Seems to be about the best I can do.

Don, you gotta read between the lines a bit. What I'm saying is call around and investigate your options, I didn't say Haggerty is a solution for everyone, sure was for me though. The Fury doesn't get driven everyday, the Town Car does, however and so it is insured through Progressive and not Haggerty for that reason.

My car has liability insurance through Erie. We shopped around and having collision coverage on my car would have been hundreds of dollars extra per year. That was four years ago and my car has not been in an accident since then, so I probably saved double the car's value by sticking with liability. And if I got into an accident tomorrow and the car was totaled, I could use that money to buy another car.

That's a good idea with keeping the receipts. I also hang onto them in case I decide to sell the car.

I'm willing to wager that you don't have that extra money that you saved by just carrying liability insurance though. For me its just a gamble I'm not going to take and I'm glad I didn't. I've had my car just over three months and it got screwed up while parked a couple weeks ago. $1,600 dollars worth of damage. The difference for me is about twenty bucks a month so if you do the math and provided that nothing else happens to it that's over six years of me stashing that twenty away. So, full coverage is ideal for me but not necessarilly everyone else.

I also keep all receipts too, probably what helped me sell that LTD.
