1988 Grand Marquis Vinyl Roof Color Code Y5 Need info to get SEM dye mixed

    Hi Everyone,

I have a 1988 Grand Marquis LS that is white with a blue vinyl roof. It is a 64,000 mile rust free Arizona car that I just picked up. The blue vinyl roof is faded out from the Arizona sun, but it is not cracked. I would like to use SEM dye to re-color the vinyl roof just to get it to look half decent. The color code on the door sticker is Y5. The guys at my paint supply place said they need to know the actual color name to mix up the dye for me as there are three blues used by Ford in 1988. Does anyone have a 1988 Grand Marquis sales brochure or dealer album that would have the actual color name for the blue vinyl roof? See attached photo for door sticker and color code Y5.

    Thank you in advance,

    Chris

Not sure if it changed in '88 but for '87 the only blue (for the vinyl roof) was called "Dark Shadow Blue".

Y5 is the code for Oxford White (the color of the car's paint, not the vinyl top).

You'll probably have to get them to scan a bit of the top that's under some trim (hence will be original color and not faded) and then mix you a proper color.

That's what I thought, but according to this graphic:

        from here: http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au...d_usa_1988.htm

I think he is correct in saying Y5 is the Vinyl Roof color code, and blue is likely the original color.
I wonder if the color codes for paint and vinyl may be the same codes but not represent the same color? Oxford White is also the only listing anywhere that I found for Y5.

On my 91 I ordered Crystal Blue Metallic paint based on information from another thread that indicated the correct color code for my 91 is KA.

Automotive touchup lists KA as Crystal Blue Metallic which is correct for my car. http://www.automotivetouchup.com/tou...91/all-models/
Under VR on my car I have YW which is not even listed on automotive touch up.
If I do a google search for:
        1991 Ford color code "YW"
I see results saying that "YW" is Smoke Metallic for 1991 Ford... not the white vinyl that my top is.

        Edit:

That might be the best bet.

          Sly,

I believe that 9L is the exterior color code as it is shown just above "EXTERIOR PAINT COLORS" on the door sticker. Color code 9L is indeed Oxford White from what I am able to gather from Mr. Google. We do know that there can sometimes be other codes for the same color.

The car has never been re-painted because the whole inside of the car (I have the entire interior out right now for a proper cleaning) is white; the inside of the trunk, door jambs, floor boards, package tray, inner quarters, etc.

Code "Y5" is listed under "VR" which I believe stands for "Vinyl Roof". Therefore, I believe that Y5 refers to the vinyl roof color, and in my case it is blue, but I want to know the name of the color.

I think that "Dark Shadow Blue" is the best answer so far, albeit for a 1987 car and not a 1988 car.

          Chris

The "build sheet" letter that Ford can send you will list original paint codes AND their actual names, as they existed at the time the car was built.

For Canadian customers with Canadian cars, this request is free.
It is ordered by calling the Ford of Canada Customer Relationship Centre (1-800-565-FORD and going through all the prompts for "any other request").

Might not be the quickest process but it'll get the info you need...

(even if you get the info elsewhere, it's neat to have either way)

Don't think any color codes refer to the roof - only the interior and exterior (usually the exterior). I would look into the color I gave you and take it from there unless your research shows something different.

Right you are about the codes, but the roof is definitely mentioned...

Anyway, it's an option to pursue if desired.

Yeah, Build Sheets do list that info but it appears he may not wish to wait for one and was looking to either get the info from the codes or from someone here to shortcut the process. Build Sheets (if you're not pressed for time) ARE a good thing to get. +1 on the info for him to get one!!!

Thanks for your help guys. I will give Ford a call and then see what they come up with for me. I am not in a rush to get this job done, as I would sooner get it done correctly than quick.

                      Best regards,

Just out of curiosity, does the door sticker on your 91 show CR instead of VR since it has a Cloth Carriage Roof?

Just called Ford of Canada, it will take up to 2 days to get the info to the research dept. and then they can e-mail me the results of the build sheet for my car, so I am sure I should have something by next week.

                          Cheers,

                          Chris

Does not...yet the roof was noted on the actual build sheet paper I found under the carpet.

I totally missed the VR part. bah. I guess the site I found doesn't have the correct info.
