I agree with Sly. Is the engine out of the car? With the engine in there you can still paint but if you want to be neat about it, you would have to tape off everything you don't want getting painted and you still won't be able to get into all the places. That said, I think it could still come out looking okay. (But that depends on what your level of "acceptable" is)
The little things can be pulled out and painted like brackets and such or mask off some stuff.. Otherwise I'd agree with the others the ideal way is to have the engine out
I shoulda said I was pulling the engine. I just don't know if I should pressure wash everything before or after the engine is out. Then I will have all the wires and other stuff left behind in the way, I think. I haven't pulled an EFI engine yet so.........
it is so much easier to get a good clean and paint without the engine in there. i let some industrial degreaser soak for a few hours and pressure washed the grease ans grime off then repainted the frame and crossmember on my F150 when i had the engine out. cant find any before pics but here's an after pic

pull it, tie wires and such out of the way, then go to town. You can pressure wash it with one of those washers that sucks in the cleaner as it goes, or just spray in the cleaner, let it soak a bit, then scrub and blast out the remains of the goo.

I might just do this. I'll get the flatbed to bring it to one of the car washes and spray away. The lopo isn't returning to the CV engine bay, so I am not too worried about cleaning it. Though, it's a possibility that it might make it into the Ranger.
Sounds good. I don't know if the owner of one of those self car washes would be bothered by a car being trailered in to wash though. (Idk why they would).
But I do know that all the ones by me have signs saying "NO ENGINE BAY CLEANING" (or something to that effect) in the car bays. So that might be something to check for.
Also, as others have said, I would use a degreaser as well as soap to clean it out. The paint needs a clean surface to stick to.
