1991 Grand Marquis Matte Black wrap

I finally decided to start wrapping my 91 GM LS as I finally have the time and money to do it. Thanks to all the helpful people and threads on these forums I was able to strip down almost all the trim and make the wrap look better and last longer. The worst part was stripping all the peeling clear coat off... apparently at some point in her life she was repainted (terribly might I add) and they just didn't use quality materials. They even over sprayed under the handles, door sills, etc. but its still a world better than any Maaco job I've wrapped on.

For those of you interested in what materials and tools I'm using, I'm using a Porter Cable 6 inch random orbital electric sander. Got it for $100 on Amazon. The wrap I'm using is just 3M's 1080 series Matte Black. Other materials include - Primer, swabs, rags, lots of alchohol, future shine, 3M stik it sanding discs (400 grit), tools, tape, and all of those specialty wrap tools.

After about 17 hours of sanding

Keep in mind for vinyl to adhere and look nice all I have to do is get the body smooth enough to not show any imperfections (cracks, rocks, etc.) so the lower portions of the vehicle that were not exposed to as much UV damage did not need to be sanded. On to the wrap so far -

    looks terrible, right

That's it so far for the first day, I'll post more progress tomorrow. I'm interested to see what you guys think. I'm loving how it looks with the rims, but I'm having seconds thoughts about the chrome trim on matte black. On sports cars it looks nice but for some reason I'm not really liking the look and thinking about wrapping all the chrome trim matte as well.

I didn't think I was going to like it when you had posted your plans in another thread, but so far I think it really looks good.
The chrome around the windows does seem out of place, I think you're right the trim may look better wrapped.

That trim on the lower part of the door doesn't look bad, but I think the chrome trim that was taken off below the doors might look out of place if you put it back on. Then again if you do put that back on maybe the chrome trim around the windows will seems more like it belongs.

Either way, I like how it looks so far.

Is wrapping somehow different than painting? I'm old and don't understand the lingo of you young whippersnappers.

I'm actually really surprised at how good it looks.

Haha, I'm glad you're coming around a bit. I know my car looked like a zombie car for a while lol. The trim on the lower part of the doors is going back on but I was absolutely planning on wrapping it as well. I'm not going to just leave those pop rivets exposed.

Yes, wraps are a totally different beast. Vehicle wrapping is the act of manipulating and contouring vinyl onto a vehicle. Installers use these torches to manipulate, stretch, and shrink the vinyl - http://images1.testseek.com/images/p...54056101_o.jpg
I do wraps for a living so this is second nature to me, but it takes a long time to learn the tricks and get a feel for how the material works. I screwed up lots of $$$ worth of panels before I really got it... :s

In the most simple terms its a giant high tech sticker. Usually wraps are done to advertise for a company, or personal vehicles (like in my case) to protect the paint from UV damage, rocks, chips, etc. and also give the vehicle a totally different look. They also come off at any time without damaging factory paint (obviously my car is exempt from this :p). The reason I've chosen wrapping over painting is because I already have all the tools and necessary supplies, all I needed was $450 for the material + my time and labor. I will however be getting her professionally painted in a few years because I am super meticulous.

I like that look. Once I get all the body work and sanding done to mine, I'm seriously considering wrapping it instead of painting it. Good job man!

Looks like a "skilled" job. In other words, don't try this at home unless you really know what you are doing. From the photos, he knows what he is doing!!!

It does have limo on the rear windshield + rear windows and 33% in the front (legal for AZ, not for CO. I've been pulled over enough to know this).

Thanks =] specialty tools include squeedge's (I use geek wrap squeedges only, expensive but the best), I have two olfa knives, a ton of blades, primer, I use a set of hook tools that also came in handy removing trim, vinyl magnet's to lay the panels up, tape (I use bron tape), stabilio pencils come in handy a LOT when cutting up panels of vinyl, the torch head ($50 from lowes or HD), and propane. Don't use MAP gas. I strongly suggest a belt tool sack as well. Other tools I use that aren't so much specialty are a tape measure and ruler. My ruler is a 10" steel $40 engraved vinyl ruler though (took it from one of my jobs :p) which is perfect for lining up text panels, but this is matte so it doesn't matter/isn't necessary.
