    85 LTC Lighting upgrade

    Hello all! I'm the new owner of a repainted/new top TC. The previous owner, my Mom, took very good care of it. It's got about 85k on it and that is mostly highway miles.

    After noticing the headlights being a bit dim I decided to start upgrading them. I installed 4 Autopal housings and 4 Hella 100/55 watt H4's. I tested the lighting and observed that there was NO WAY the stock lighting circuit would hold up to all the wattage I was putting thru it. I started the wiring upgrade and currently have the low beam circuit complete. I'll be doing the high beams as time permits. To keep things safe the high beams have been disconnected. I decided to use two relays for the high beams due to high amp draw.

    You definitely did good here (overall, I didn't scrutinize your diagram, lol).
    Our cars are known for burning/melting the headlight switch and/or connectors just with plain old regular halogens.
    If you have access to junkyards, you can find all kinds of waterproof underhood (or in trunks) fuse/relay boxes to use with projects like this.

      Nice, at first glance I thought you were using both pins 87 and 87a. Then I actually looked at what you have going on and can see that you know exactly what you're doing.

        Thanks for the input. As a journeyman HVAC/R tech I have a pretty good knowledge of electrical and how components function.

        BTW, I also replaced the connectors with the ceramic type and soldered all connections.

          Are you talking the connectors that connect to the headlight itself?

          If so, would you mind sharing where you bought the connectors? This project is on the list for mine come spring time.
          1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

            No problem, http://www.cycleterminal.com/headlight-connectors.html 4th one down are ones I bought. Three things. 1. Buy an extra connector or two 2. Buy extra terminal 3. If using 10 gad wire you will need to trim off a few strands otherwise you won't be able to get the terminal all the way in to lock in to the connector and don't over solder either.

              Welcome. Appreciate the link. I will assess my connector situation and purchase a set of those ceramic housings as I am running h4's as well.

                    Also I will be putting all my wires into split loom. I have everything zip tied just to keep every thing in place until it's complete.

                      Thanks for the link. Another question. If I recall, the same connector will work with both high and low beams, right? The high beam one just omits one wire if I remember.

                        Correct. Looking at my schematic you'll see that I am using 4 100/55 H4 bulbs. I now have 4 lows along with the 4 highs.

                          I had thought about going with four hi/lo bulbs as well. Throw some additional light on low, then all four as usual on hi.

                            The stock lighting circuit leaves much to be desired. Not melting the switches or connectors would be among them. Not dropping silly amounts of voltage for no good reason is also among them. I got something like 2 volts extra at my headlights when I added the relay harness. The difference in light output with an extra 2 volts is pretty impressive.
