    Headlight restoration

So the girlfriend and myself picked her up a new daily driver. 2000 gsr Integra 5 speed, I'll introduce it later lol.

So anyway the headlights where really yellow and shitty looking, so I decided to pop off the bumper cover and give them a quick restore. This is not a headlight restoration kit, just auto collision products I use at work.

Warning:plastic headlights only, do not sand glass headlights.

Things needed (to do it the way I did)
Dual action sander (random orbital sander) the finishing variety.
800 grit sand paper for the DA
1500 grit sand paper for the DA
3000 grit sand paper for the DA
High speed buffer (I prefer a dewalt)
    Medium compound
    Wax of your choice

Okay, so first you start with the 800 on the DA (I used a soft pad on the DA for every step btw). Work the 800 pretty good this is where you will take out your larger scratches and rock chips. After you finish withe the 800 switch to your 1500 grit (both my 800 and 1500 are dry papers). Work the 1500 until all the 800 scratches are gone. Now get a spray bottle with water and switch to the 3000(trizact). Wet down the paper, wet down the headlights and go to town, really take your time with this step, the more time you take here the easier it will be to buff them. Now that you're done with the 3000, whip out the buffer and a good quality medium grit compound, apply a small amount of compound set your buffer to 1200-1800 rpm. I prefer higher rpm, but if you are a novice keep the rpm slow, be sure to keep the buffer moving at all times. You don't want to melt your headlight. Now once you get them buffed to a shine you're happy with its time to apply the wax to seal the surface, maybe three coats of wax, you want to seal the surface well.

That's it youre done, now step back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

    before

    sanded with 800

    sanded with 1500

    sanded with 3000

buffed and waxed (the finished product)

Thats it, the same technique can be used on any vehicle with composite headlights. You can also do all of this by hand, it just takes alot longer. I probably had about an hour and a half in it, including taking off the bumper cover and putting it back on. Expect 3-5 hours if done by hand, maybe more.

    Enjoy!

It looks really good, however the results don't last long. The only true way to rid yourself of yellowing/blurry lenses is to replace them with new.

We do these for people at the shop, usually when we finish we spray PPG 630 clear on them. We have one custom that got it done 2 years ago and still looks great. If you don't put clear on them(really good clear) they yellow back. But This is just a fix to be able to see until she can afford new ones. You had to drive around with high beams everywhere and could still barley see. It's much better now.

I did the ones on the escort about a year ago. Look just as clear as they did once I did them. I apply 303 aerospace protectant regularly.

Vaguely related, but this is how you un-shittify turntable dust covers too. When they get all scratched and hazy, you sand them down. Usually don't need to get to 800, most of the time starting at 1500 does the trick.
