Vinyl Top - Paint or Redo?

Ok, so I am getting my 87 Grand Marquis painted Black. The rust (which you can't see in the pics) grew, and after taking off on the trim, the front quarter panel actually had a rust hole. So getting all the rust taken care of, full wetsand and repaint to black.

Now, not sure about you, but a cream colored top on an 87 doesn't exactly look great, so I am left with a dillema. Paint it, or get a new one. There are no tears whatsoever in the top, but it is faded on the top. My big thing is, I don't want to go the cheap route and get it painted, and have it fade, or fall apart. But I also don't want to spend the $750 for a new top(is that a lot?). My quesion to you guys is:

If you have had your top painted, how well does it hold up?

If you paint it, what kind of paint do you recommend?

Any kind of prep work that will help it hold?

I'll be posting before and after pictures when it's all done. I'm pretty excited to see the results!

I had the top painted on my 89 MGM. It didn't hold up and I ended up replacing the top.

      *sigh*

I did some more research, and from the looks of it, I'll just get a new one. Sucks because the material on the one I have is perfectly fine. Oh well. Gonna shop around and see if I can find something cheaper. Since you got yours replaced, is it an exact replace? IE the same size and dimensions?

Based on my research in the Cleveland/Akron area $750 is a bit high, FYI. Problem is I could only find two guys who still do it. If there's only one out your way....

I had a local shop do it. It looked 100% factory, I think it cost around 300 but that was a long time ago.

i can do either or for you, paint, which i prefer rustoleum professional, it holds up rather well, or revynil your ride, which will prob run about 250-300 or so youll need the vynil, glue, and foam/batting, i even have the pics from gadgets top when his got done.

nothing will come close to having new vinyl installed. painting interior parts is a different story. get a new top installed, after the money and time, you will be glad you did.
