Needs to be much smoother than 120 grit will leave it before paint will look worth a damn on it. 400 or so is more in the neighborhood. If you sand it with 120 and paint that, it will look like someone drug the panel down the road and then shot paint on it.

on my truck (not going for looks, just rust removal) I just laid on the primer nice and thick after some light 240 grit. I should go back and knock it down some. it's rough as hell (not from the sandpaper... but from the primer thickness).
