    glass tint

I see many references on this site to readers' cars with varying degrees of window tint, presumably a change made by the owner. Is this typically accomplished with some kind of aftermarket kit or product, or by swapping windows from a yard? My GM LS has what appears to be a typical bluish tint, and ideally I'd like to go slightly darker with more of a smoke or greyish effect. Thanks.

yup... aftermarket shops that install the stuff. Can usually get them outfitted with basic tints for around $100 in competitive areas (large cities). the best tint I've ever seen was one that a guy did himself with that 3M home reflective tint (UV/IR blocker) that is almost impossible to see through from the outside, but a light meter will still read 35% (legal in most states) and is an epic heat reducer when the car is left out in the sun. I haven't been able to find that tint when I've looked... but then I didn't look very hard either.

I tint my own SIDE windows. Rear windows are too difficult for me. Sides WILL be too difficult for most. Pay to have it done. Ask around as many people get tints done.

ask if they guarantee it to not turn purple. Cheaper tints will do this after a while, and it looks a little silly IMO. Bad tint jobs with bubbles also look silly.

Yeah, It takes someone pretty good to be able to do a back window, especially on a grand marquis. I tinted a few of my buddies side windows but usually the back window is going to have to be done by two seperate pieces. Find a professional because its going to be 2 or 3 hours of hell and failure if you try it yourself. If you have lots of time on your hands and a lot of patience youtube a how to video, pick up the proper supplies and give your side windows a try. Dont forget to leave extra tint at the top to cover the part of the window thats up inside.

hey!... stop talking about my vic! :p

considering that's the tint that came on the car when I bought it and I have no clue who dun it... I don't really care that it's bubbled up. I might have it replaced anyhow since the driver side windows are really starting to peel.

Thanks. So this is a film application (iirc a very long time ago you could buy window tint that was applied in liquid form). Asking around for a competent specialist is a really good suggestion. I work near a small city that boasts an abundance of small, late-model, Asian cars that have been customized to look somewhat like old-time lead sleds and sound (in the owner's mind, at least) like race cars. Probably 95% of these cars have aftermarket tint applied, so the information should be readily available.
