Towncars are not weird. They have a logical keying system. One key for doors and ignition, and a separate key for glovebox and trunk. Fords have a stupid keying system. You have to hand someone both keys in order to let them unlock the door and start the vehicle. Towncars were designed for valet parking with the idea of securing your drugs and other evidence in the trunk or glovebox and not having the valet able to access those items.
And an 88 would have been optional with keyless entry. I doubt anything was changed. Trust me, nobody (but me) is going to bother with installing a factory keyless entry setup in a non-keyless vehicle.
