    Wheels refinished

This has been an on again off again (more off than on) project for the past year and a half that is almost done.

I decided I wanted a set of lace spoke wheels for the summer tires, and keep the cop wheels for the winter tires for the 99 Grand Marquis. I found a set of rims at a junkyard, which were in ROUGH shape (sans chrome lug nuts and centers of course). Aircraft stripper and media blasting did nothing to get rid of the peeling clear coat and pitting, so I broke down and had them sandblasted.

I then primed the whole wheel, and set to work sanding, and sanding and sanding the outer rims. After countless hours of sanding they were ready for polishing. After getting a descent shine on the rim, I masked it off and painted the centers a metallic mid grey. Then removed the masking, and hand polished the rim. Finally a coat of clear over everything finished the job.

Unfortunately the clear dulled the polished finish a bit, but at least now the few remaining sanding scratches aren't visible. I also don't have any before pictures, but will post some of the final wheel (3 done, one almost done) as it is now in a few days. Just need a set of proper lug nuts and a couple more hours with the fourth wheel. Can't wait until spring to get these babies on the car!

            They look great!

I'm about to do a set. If you don't mind, what'd sandblasting set you back? And what clear coat did you use?

I think the sandblasting cost about $60 for all four, but I can remember exactly as it was almost two years ago.

The clearcoat I used was Dupli-Color High Performance Wheel Coating. The grey paint was the same stuff.
