    Cleaning Turbines

I still run the turbines for the '86 CV and I'm wondering how to go about cleaning the years of brake dust and such. Spray on wheel cleaner isn't strong enough. Should I try sanding them down?

Sanding turbines is impossible. Just the lip only takes forever.

A toothbrush and some good wheel cleaner and a lot of time.

yea, letting a cleaner sit and do the work for you wont cut it. you need a tooth brush or something simmilar to agitate the dirt and grime. it takes a while but, its the best way

Well...I do have all spring, summer, and some of fall. When my patience wears thin, do you think a wire wheel/brush will work, or too harsh?

wire brush might rip the clearcoat off if any is left. Once that happens, the aluminum corrodes and really looks awful. I'd stay with a plastic bristle brush if at all possible.

There is a place here that will re finish aluminum wheels front and back for about $80 bucks a piece, of course at that point you could probably find a cleaner set.

good to know! i bought a big bbq scraping wiry brush. i'm going to get something with bristles.

would engine degreaser hurt em at all? I couldn't find any oven cleaner that didn't specify "NOT TO BE USED ON: blah blah aluminum blah" but I picked up some of that engine brite shit to clean up my new intake before painting

considering all the aluminum valve covers, heads, etc... engine degreaser "should" work.

If it says don't use on aluminum, like purple power, don't use it. It makes bare aluminum look like shit.
Wheel cleaner, toothbrush, garden hose, and time is all you need.

I hate turbines, they look good but they get dirty so fast and take so long to clean.

Hence the reason I painted mine black.

I had some get onto my summer wheels and it left streaks where it rode across the surface of the wheel.

Though with the turbines, I might give it a try cause they look like crap as is.
