    A/C Rotted My Frame. .

Hey there guys I just wanted to ask you guys a question. When I bought my 89' MGM the car looked impeccable for 20 years in our Canadian climate. Hardly any rust but when I took the car for a oil change I saw that the frame on the front passenger side just after the door is a nice chunk of frame gone. Every where else looks great but right there. Now I also knew another guy who has the same car and he says its the way the air conditioning when it spits out the water it drips into a little hole in the frame and runs down there and collects causing it to rot. Thats what happened to his but he just welded it up just wanted to know what you guys think thanks.

yea, very common. if you can get someone to weld in a patch, you will be all set. just get your car undercoated and you wont have issues.

try sticking to having a repitable welder or frame shop do it since you want it to be strong and look half decent.

My frame rotted on the opposite side, go figure. Frame is fine under the AC, don't ask me how that happened.

                      rust never sleeps
you gotta do your best to keep the body drains open and free from debris, washing the dirt out of the door jambs and the wheelwells and under the car helps.......if the car is already rotted away completely, theres not much you can do

yeah, the rust in your frame is starting from the inside of the frame. Your best bet is to go overkill on welding it all up (in area, not thickness of metal) and the undercoat the hell out of the interior of the frame through every access hole you can find. Poke and prod ALL the metal around your hole. I though I had a 2-3 inch hole, and after a few minutes with a screwdriver I had 2 4-5 inchers.

I should really edit that paragraph to sound less homosexual.

My 87 has some surface frame rust/rot, passenger side but its pretty far back...could be A/C? As of now it passes inspection because the guy that inspects it knows me and that I just use it as a cruiser/toy and its not very serious yet.

see now thats my problem I can't restore the car knowing that there is always some thing in the frame that is eating away and one day ill just have to junk it. Let's say I spend X amount of money on the car every thing is mint but inside the frame where know one can see is just eating itself then like pantera77 said car starts to bend. I guess thats just the way it goes
