    1997 Fender Questions ???

I keep reading that 1998+ fenders will fit a 1995-1997, is this correct? Anyone know exactly what years can be swapped? What about the 97 & 98 body trim, it's not the same, does it screw in place or need to be glued? Also, there is a strip of chrome that runs along the top of the corner light, it's not on 1998+...is it part of the light lens or does it bolt to the fender itself?

    Thanks

The fenders on 92-97 Grand marquis are different. The cutout for the sidemarker lamp assy is different. The Crown Vics use the same fender from 92 to current, along with the 98 to current Grand Marquis. The 92-97 GM is a stand alone. I ran into this quite by accident, when repairing a 95 GM for a friend. The place I ordered from sent me the 98+ fender, and I didn't realize it till after I had the fender on. I had to take it back off, and send it back to have it exchanged. Not fun.

Even rockauto.com says the fenders are the same from 1995-2002 on their site. There is some serious incorrect information going around.

What exactly didn't fit right for the one you were working on? You said you had the fender on and had to remove it? It actually did fit on the car then?

Going by what Mike said "the cutout for the sidemarker lamp assy is different" between Grand Marquis and Crown Victorias between 1992 - 1997

Oh yeah. Other than the light cutout, the fender was a direct bolt-on. I didn't figure it out until I tried to put the header panel, and light assy back in. Thankfully, the place I got the parts from didn't give me a hard time about exchanging it. The manager checked my order, to make sure I did in fact ask for 95 G.M. parts, and found the counter guy screwed up.

That's crazy. Even ShermanParts, the people who supply RockAuto have 95-02 as the year range. Must be a lot of unhappy fender buyers out there...

The new fender that was installed on my '93 was made for '92-'97 models, according to the box it arrived in.

Maybe 92-97 were the same aside from the antenna mount on the passenger side? At least the driver side might be a clean swap...

I searched the parts sites, and this should show the differences i was talking about.

Humm, not to fuel the fire but picture #2 is (I'm nearly positive) a Crown Victoria fender. If that is what you received for your car maybe you were given a Crown Victoria fender instead of a Grand Marquis fender which is why you had the trouble with the corner lamp.

Take a look at the photos I've added below. The first 3 are all Grand Marquis pictures, and you can see 92-94, 95-97 & 98-02 all have the angle for the corner lamp. I've tried to outline it a little in each picture. The final pictures are of Crown Victoria fenders which don't have the unique angle for the corner lamp that a Grand Marquis has in the 3 other photos. The Crown Victoria corner lamp sort of just curves downward like the second picture you posted above. What do you think?

                    Grand Marquis 92-94

                    Grand Marquis 95-97

                    Grand Marquis 98-02

                    Crown Victoria 92-97

                    Crown Victoria 98-02

Edit: If the fender you received was infact for a Grand Marquis but looked like picture #2 that you have posted earlier it may have been made for a 2003+ model when the fenders were more the same style as the Crown Victoria fenders.

I don't know where you got the third GM pic, but it's in the 92-97 range. I'm sure somebody with a late model GM can show us some pics of their cars, to clear this up for both of us.

This picture? If that's the one you mean it's a 1998 GM.

Note the chrome trim that is present above the headlight and corner lamp on the 95-97 picture is not present on the the third picture. It was not included on 1998-2002 models. The lens was different but the fender the same. Apparently.

Check out these 98-02 MGM eBay auctions and have a look at the fenders and corner lamps. They all have that unique upswept angle on the corner lamp, like my third picture. The last link is of a 2003 MGM, the year the shape of both the lens & corner lamp and the fender changed to match more with the Crown Victoria style.

                        2002

Finally, this is a 2003 model and you can see the shape of the fender and lens has changed from that of the previous models.

Do you think there is any chance you were sent a fender from a Crown Victoria or a 2003+ Grand Marquis?
