A 1987 car isn't clearcoated from the factory?

Also: even if it's single-stage paint you can wet sand it. It's called color sanding.

            My 83 isn't cleared.
I know you can sand any paint. Just have to be careful not to sand through, well unless your going to repaint it.

Buh? Seriously? My '87-built (one of the earliest '88 model year - it still has '87 shit on it) Town Car is clearcoated. Maybe just because it's a Town Car and it's fancy? My '85 wasn't but that car was in a SERIOUS accident at some point in it's life so I don't know if it came single stage or if the shop repainted it in single stage... although I know a lot of companies started changing over around then.

I was trying to touch up the hundreds of paint chips but unfortunately what I "thought" was right based on my research was not. I globbed too much touch up paint and when I went to knock it down with 1000 grit, I ended up going through the surrounding paint. I am not sure if it is clearcoated or not. I could see it as there was definitely a change as I got more towards the primer coat. However this could also have been getting through the "metallics" and down to the paint just above the primer coat (red primer, brown topcoat).

I ended up screwing up the RH side of the hood and the RH header panel. I will probably just pull off the header panel and hood this winter and have them repainted and I'm not too mad at myself except I would have preferred not to have ruined the paint... lol.

When you sanded it, was the stuff that came off the paint color? Or was it white?

Nope it was always brown so I guess I would say no clearcoat.

My '88 P72 wasn't clearcoated. The paint was badly faded, but was otherwise good, especially compared to some of the peeled up Ford specials of that era. Come to think of it, my '89 parts car isn't cleared either. But, my '90 was, and what a mess it was.

My brother's '87 Bronco was cleared, and the paint was replaced by ford, under a recall. Also, that '88 F150 I had was cleared, and parts had been repainted.

Must have been earlier for some models, and later for others.

Well, fail number 2. I could not find an adhesive remover that worked on the side strip residue (3M, light brush cleaner, goo gone, etc). So finally got the "professional" airplane decal remove type stuff. Worked great. AT REMOVING PAINT. Yes it was supposed to be safe for all surfaces but apparently, not for mine. I left it on and where it ran down the side of the fender, the paint started softening and lifting. In a panic I doused it with simple green and water and got the paint to stop softening. Now dry, it has hardened again but I doubt I will be able to wet sand it smooth since the paint is so thin.

I'm starting to think I am no skill here.
