best way to clean out the engine bay?

i have seen lots of sprays and foams that you rinse out with a hose. but i'm not sure if it will cause problems in my electrical connections or not. Let me know how yas clean things up under there.

The best way I have come up with is either purple power, or simple green. Spray it on the engine when it is warm. Let it soak for a while, then either use steam, hot water high pressure, (coin operated car wash) or hook a hose up to the connection on your hot water heater, to get hot water straight from your hot water heater. (Need to wear gloves, as the nozzle will get hot...) The main thing is HOT water... As long as you don't dwell on spraying any electronics under the hood, you should be ok... Watchdog did his with a high pressure cleaner unit... it was amazing the difference! I use purple power frequently to keep my 91 clean under the hood, with no problems with any components under the hood....

Just keep the water out of the alternator (I sometimes put a bag over it). Be careful if you have an open air cleaner element too. Don't be spraying it right on it. Otherwise, no worries.

I just did my Ram, which has a retarded amount of wiring under the hood. I kept the engine running.

I do pretty much the same thing. If something gets wonky, it needed to be re-sealed anyway. Never had it happen from an engine cleaning, but once I did get moisture in the ecm connector after several days of heavy rain and not driving the car. I think it was condensation more than anything else.

purple power works ok...simple green was allright too, however I really liked Black Magic's engine degreaser and shine.... I also just use a garden hose usually, however i imagine a high pressure sprayer would help far more

We use Greased Lightning at work to dissolve a substance that used to be oil before the radiation baked it into a crunchy varnish-like substance. I wonder how well it works as an engine degreaser. I know it eats paint off.

Cover the alternator, distributor, and the relays on the fender and you'll be fine.
