    Primered panels?

    Any autobody shop guys or people who have experience with preforming body work, or just painting for that matter know if it is alright to leave primered panels exposed to the elements such as rain and moisture.

    I heard that primer dos not leave a seal like paint would and allows moisture through and can rust underneath. I will have to preform the body work on my car soon and i want to know if it is advisable to leave primered parts exposed to rain and moisture.

    The primers I used to work with are water based; they would soak up moisture and actually help the panel rust more quickly if not painted immediately.

    I wouldn't leave a panel exposed any longer than necessary even if it weren't a water based primer.

      Primer is porous, water based or otherwise. Its not a good idea to leave it exposed to the elements.

          Also can be affected by high humidity. Even inside, out of the weather.

              thats why you usually immediatly paint the car after primering spots... stupid ricers with their cars completely primered for months driving around lol... i see them ALL the time

                  Ever see rusty primer? There is a reason for that. Even if you have to just use some duplicolor rattle can stuff thats not really the right color, paint it with something to keep it sealed. You can always sand it down when you're ready for paint.

                    As a side-note, self-etch primer can block moisture a little bit better than everyday primer-surfacer. It's by no means moisture-proof, but it works better than the usual shit.
