might be extra bracing under there... ones i got from junkyards i unbolted the bumper from the horns and you have to kind of tilt the bumper and it falls out. not that difficult, but awkward. i have to tear down the slotted bumpers to be able to do the colored trim swap in order to mount the slotted bumpers on my cars.

6 or 8 sounds right. They're pretty easy to see, just look at the back side of the bumper bracket and you'll see whats on there. Mind you that takes the bumper with the bracing off the car. If you want to seperate the bumper off the bracing, do that at home but there are a couple more bolts inside.

a little warning, assuming you have an all steel front it is gonna weigh something like 75#'s so you might need some one to help to keep it from falling on you.

you have to have the bracing (or at least a part of it like me) that is what the bumper actually mounts to the body with.

when i did mine i chopped the support down to just the frame side mounting pad and three bumper bolts worth of bracing. i got an aluminum support and an aluminum outer for the front bumper, with the bracing cut up i dropped something like 50#s of weight from the steel/steel bumper. The rear bumper is all steel with a chopped support, thats worth something like 15#.

i didnt see any reduction in bumper stiffness.

i have removed slotted bumpers by myself with no problem... one was aluminum inner with steel cover and other was steel skinned and steel inners. i remove all bolts excet for one on each side having them just loose. then i remove reamaining bolt on one side, hold that side with knee while removing final bolt. while climbing out i kind of turn into a contortionist and hold the bumper bench press style and get out and lay bumper down. i dont find removing bumpers to be a problem. i think the bigger headache is removing the painted parts to add your painted parts.

I wouldn't whack the support. There is so little in the way of crash protection up front that you might as well keep the small amount that is there.

I should do what Fordinator did to his wagon and tuck my bumpers.

Nobody plans on getting into an accident, which is why its called an accident instead of an "on purpose".

Possibly the quickest way to get a bumper off is to bring a 15mm whatever and remove the two bolts that hold the bumper mounts inside the frame. Unfortunately, that method can lead to annoyances if that end of the frame is rusted in inconvenient places.
