I'm just wondering what materials I will need to get to fix this rust myself.

I don't need to do a high quality job, but as long as I can stop the rust and paint over it, then it will be better.

You have to do somethuing fast, because you have holes on the way.

I would blast that, but be forewarned that it may pop through. Then coat with a good epoxy primer, and paint. If you don't blast the entire lower quarter, feather the rest out, and prime, etc.

Colin, you need a winter beater of some sort if you don't fix it 100% by winter.

wire brush and rust encapsulate it to slow it down......rust never sleeps.....to kill it you need to cut out the rusty sections and weld in good metal

Wire brush it sand with 120 grit green sand paper. Bubbles may break through. Need to get it smooth though. Sand and smooth insidee that areea of the trunk were it breaks through. Cut pieces of thin metal sheet about the same thickness as the body panels to fit over the holes and surounding area. Coat with JB Weld and glue the sheet metal to the inside to coverr the holes. Use the quick drying JB Weld if holding it inn place by hand works best.
Once dry JB Weld can be sanded just like body putty on the outside with the 120 grit grreen. Once it looks shooth fill in any gaps / imperfections with Bondo utimate putty. Some thick building primer from NAPA might help. Sand with 320 grit wet dry until it looks as good as you want. Caoat with either Gloss black or silver grey Rust Bullet a roller can be used to apply it. Wet sand with 600 grit smooth. If you go through the bullet coat again and resand. You are then ready to finish paint wit hspray bomb. Or leavee the rust bullet with out sanding.

YOU SHOULD coat right over the rust with rust bullet first it stops it for good bobert knows about the stuff.

so to clarify what you just said Dave...I clean/grind off the rust totally and then put on new sheet metal over the front of it by using JB weld as a glue?

POR15 or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Degrease and wire brush off the loose scale and apply either. You can top coat with some touch-up paint since both rust treatments come are black (*Encapsulator has some other colors - red, silver, ect.) Also, you should also check inside the rockers and probably coat there as well.
