    89 GM Front Cap

Hi guys - I'm new here, but boy am I glad I found this board. I have an '89 GM LS in sore need of reshaping and I'm doing work on it bit by bit. It's a project car so to speak, but due to the pending sale of our second car it's about to go back into use.

Right now I have the whole interior out except the back seat and the dash. I have new carpet (with padding) to go in, but I'm not doing that until after I change the heater core.

The thing I need help with on the body is on the front cap. I had a little fender scrape with another car and it barely bent the driver front fender in. That's no biggie, but it also pulled (more like ripped) the front cap forward, splitting the screw seats that hold it to the fender. Here's what it looks like now:

What to do about it though? Should I look for a new cap or is there some way to repair the screw seats? This is the only major defect in the body and I plan to get a paint job after I fix this (the original is all KINDS of scratched up), so I guess a cap of a different color from a yard wouldn't be bad. Thanks for any input though.

    Welcome!

With my expirience, it looks as if the studs that are in the header panel that aid in attaching the fronts of the fenders to the header have pulled out.

My suggestion? Well, the bolts are a royal COCKSUCKER to reach, but remove the header panel.

Pull those studs out, drill the holes out a little, and use some good epoxy to put them back in...

Bolt the header back on. You should be good to go!

Oh yeah, thanx for the visual Really helps to see what you are working with...

Yeah, I figured you'd say that about the screws since after looking 8 or 10 times I still can't see where the heads are. Any pointers on how to approach them? Can I get to it from the engine compartment, or are they behind the fenderliner? Ugh.

        1. The engine compartment is the best way to get to em

        2. A socket, and extensions and u-joints

        3. LOTS of cussing.

Thanks a bunch. I like to know what I'm getting into before I start sweating and cussing. I'm gonna try to get started on it this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Now that you mention it, I was thinking of taking a bunch of pics of the car as it is right now (bordering on hideous) to let you all know what I'm planning on doing to it. I love the beast - it was the car that made me fall in love with F/L/M. Our other two vehicles are a 2000 Crown Vic PI and a 2002 F-150 Supercrew 4x4
