just have to be careful and try to not soak the cardboard backer. it might warp if it gets wet, once you get it going it shouldnt take much

Thanks guys! Yeah, no wrinkles, just a few annoying dimples here and there that I'm hoping will settle out with some seasonal heat-cycling sort of like with new carpet. And if I'm honest, there's a little area that's mostly covered by the d/s sunvisor that I screwed up by peeling some of the fabric back to restick it and not realizing a small section was stuck better than I thought. Next headliner attempt will involve getting the better 3M spray adhesive to start instead of that Duro stuff that sprays more like hair spray. In other fun news, I just got through swapping the '79 front seats into the car (no more non-coordinating burgundy full bench) so that all the quasi-finished portions of the interior at least coordinate, with the exception of figuring out how to recover the sunvisors (looks like it should be easy, once one learns how to get the front and back halves apart) and further attention to the Medium Red plastic trim that's gotten faded and oxidized.

Unfortunately GS, I didn't think to take any measurements of the roof ... have a feeling it won't be *that* long till this stuff comes back out for some attention to the plastic pieces, though. Hey, wait, I do have a couple of pics I took of the front seat area with the headliner out. Looks like the first reinforcing piece is pretty much in line with the B pillars. I do like the idea of an overhead console..... please keep me posted on your brainstorms!

I will probably mock one up out of cardboard and try a few configurations, when I actually get a chance to tinker with the car again... Oh well, better go back to work now.

Oh, one last thing. Was all that carpet padding type stuff already installed along the roof, or did you put it in. Amazingly enough I have never had the headliner out of a box.

Not sure if it's what you're asking, but the foam backing and the outer fabric are sold all as one piece in a roll. No need to worry about applying foam separately if you get this stuff, just have to remove all the old foam (first pic) before proceeding.

No, I meant the stuff ABOVE the cardboard liner. The stuff that's hanging down in this picture.

Oooh, that crap. That's the same sort of annoying recycled-felt insulation they use everywhere on these cars, and it has the same tendency to spontaneously tear itself in half if you look at it funny. I just left my original junk in place, in part because I wasn't going to spend any more $$ on this project than I had to, but a nicer solution would be to substitute modern sound-deadening material like the stuff linked in sayineye's signature. Possible some regular fabric-store foam of appropriate thickness would work OK as well.

my car was a pretty stripped base model, but i did have a little insulation up there, mostly just between the roof bow and the roof.
