The lock mechanism does have an Exposed Slot on the rear of it, which the Lock cylinder rod is inserted through. You can insert a screwdriver into said slot, and unlock the latch.
If you were locked inside the trunk, and didn't have a screwdriver on you, you could reach your arm through one of the holes in the support structure, pull the lock rod out of the lock cylinder spring, and then use it to turn the slot and unlock the mechanism.

The latch mechanism on my car is enclosed... I'd have to look at my '88 to see if thats open or not...**2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: 5.0/ 6 spd/ 3.73s, 20K Cruiser

No need to call a locksmith then. I guess the rear seat removal/ long screwdriver method might work on a panther.**2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: 5.0/ 6 spd/ 3.73s, 20K Cruiser

And, yeah, the lock appears shrouded, but is still easy to open it seems.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!
