Ok, now im confused.I thought windex striped all the polish off of it?

When we refer to "polish" we're usually referring to a fine abrasive solution that is used to actually smooth out fine scratches and oxidation from the surface you're working on. Wax would then be applied in a separate step, just like wax on the rest of the car body. There are some "cleaner waxes" or somesuch that incorporate both a wax and a polish (I've got an ancient can in the garage that actually works pretty well on dirt-embedded paint), but I don't think most GMNers use that stuff.

Anyone know how Turtle Wax chrome polish compares? I think it's cheaper than the others, which is probably why it's the only one I've ever had. That's also the only brand rubbing and polishing compounds I've bought, because it's cheaper. I do have some Meguiar's new car polish I got for my wife's car, but my cars are a little too rough for that. :p

I thought all "organic" brake components contained asbestos ... not many folks will choose organic pads for the front, of course, but I seem to recall organic being the only choice for rear shoes ... correct me if I'm wrong ....

Hmm, I dunno, I was under the impression it was phased out??? Hell, when I was in auto school in 98 they said they didn't use it anymore so I dunno. You're probably right tho.

I always use the the mother's polish on my aluminum wheels (polished aluminum wheels are a PITA). It works quite well on all types of metals. I have also heard that 3M metal polish is good, and that Meguiar's has a good metal polish avialable as well. To be honest, I've only ever tried Mother's. It works well.

But, in my opinion, other Mother's products are lousy. I have tried the polishes, glazes, etc, and find them inferior to Meguiars (my brand of choice). Mother's is unreasonably sloppy when you are using a machine to apply it.

Also, If you are looking for a final polish to bring out a brilliant shine in your polished metals, try Meguiars #3. It is hard to find (may have to buy online), but it is a fabulous product. It is meant to buff paint, but it works well on metals (as a finish polish) as well.

I just seem to recall seeing organic as an option at parts stores .... I've never bought organic pads, of course, so it's possible they couldn't have actually gotten them if I'd wanted 'em.

One more Crome Question for yea mangs .

On my 4bbl edelbrock 1406. Is it Chrome? And do you clean it the same way? Or do you use carb cleaner? :-s :sob: hehe. Looks like Chrome but i dunno.

Nope, it's aluminum. I suppose you could go ahead and hit it with chrome polish if you can reach everywhere you want without getting polish anywhere it'll gum up the works (throttle shaft, boosters, mixture screws, etc.). Personally, I'd just scrub it down with carb cleaner and a nylon brush. Which reminds me, I have a carb or two I need to do that to myself ..... :p

Asbestos has been illegal to use in any product since sometime around the 80's... you're not going to find it anywhere except old cars and old houses that havent been touched since then.
Brake dust in general isnt good for you, so care should still be taken...

I'm not sure I knew that.. though I probably should have.

I'm currently cocooned in asbestos house siding. It's butt-ugly and an environmental disaster waiting to happen if we ever have the $$$$$ to swap it for something more modern. At least it's way durable!

You gotta give it that...my grandparents' house is something like 130 years old and it has asbestos siding. Not sure if it's original or not, but probably. Never needs painting, either.

Edelbrocks use something called Endura-Shine, its some plating crap over the aluminum. Give it a few months and it'll turn white and crusty and you won't have to worry about that anymore.
