I always had good luck at the auto body supply stores. Find yourself a good local parts store that sells all the paint and body work supplies and ask them if they know any paint guys that'll do work on the side. There are always some pro's that work for extra cash on the side in their off hours.
I do all my own body prep, and then take it to some guy hungry for extra cash for the final paint. I've always got a great job for a lot less than taking it to a shop. All you pay for is materials and their time.

I'd hit it with 120 grit on a DA sander and fog it flat black.

            Case in point:

Yeah sand scratches for the win right?

Maaco does bodywork but you have to pay extra. For that you might as well take it to a regular bodyshop.

I would just take it somewhere decent for a scuff and shoot. You never said what type of bodywork you'll be needing. But, since it's an 87 I'd say you probably need dings and dents repaired, some rear rocker help, prob more under the trim around the wheel wells, and that trunk lid is prone to rust under that back lip. If you care about the car at all don't get a base Maaco job, my neighbor had one 3 years ago and flakes from it peel off as he drives down the street. You never mentioned whether you wanted a color change or rub out which adds to cost. I read an article in Sport Truck not long ago where they sent a trunk in, got a higher end job from the and were fairly happy, but it all depends who is working at the one you personally go to. I'd also recommend a decent paint like PPG or Dupont. My decent quality repaint was expensive with the car completely stripped and partly prepped because the paint & supplies cost almost $1,000 alone plus I needed some bodywork.

my old boss had his new yorker painted at maaco......i went over the bad spots for him with my da sander, and i reccomended we prime the peeled areas and resand, but he was in a big hurry.....he had it done and about a week later it started gettng funky looking....the new paint softened up the dead clear and it started peeling....i dont reccomend a scuff and shoot if your clear is peeling off

If you're going to go through the trouble and expense of painting the "hole" car I would suggest going to a body shop that will do the prep work correctly. What's the point of new paint if it's just going to peel off.

                    Down with MACO.

I gave people such an evil look when I brought the car around to two Body Shops for repaint estimates and they'd look and it, sigh, and recommend Maaco. The guy down the street from them got the business instead. Scott is right, the clear needs to be taken down I'd say to the base coat with a nice Dupont Epoxy primer as a base. Bodywork is costly and if you half ass it, you're just wasting money.

What sort of idiot bodyshop would tell you to go to Maaco instead of taking your money themselves? Must've been the same people that put RTV on leaks in my mom's car instead of fixing it right (which had been the whole point in taking it to them in the first place; I can apply RTV myself for under five bucks).

If your car is peeling, you need to strip it to at least the primer. A guy at the local autobody supply house told me to sand the car down to the "e coat". Supposedly that is the culprit for the peeling clear. He said if you don'
t sand down through that, you'll have the same problem with the new paint after a period of time.

Thats why I used 4 rolls of DA paper to sand my car down.
