So far i have pulled the center section and the broken cruise controll buttions out, and have started filling the cracks with 2 part epoxy, after the epoxy cures i will sand it smooth with some 200 gritt sand paper. Any low spots after sanding ill level up, after that is all done ill go over the whole wheel with 400 gritt, then ill high fill primer the whole wheel and wet sand it with some 600, after it all lookes smooth i will paint it red, and after that i will lightly go over the red with some 800 then clear coat the wheel.
Here are a few pics of what i have got so far

If it costs too much, I'll go to a junkyard and get a nice one. What would be the procedure for pulling the steering wheel?

                        Wheel Puller = good.

Careful when junkarding for a wheel, they changed the way they mount in '84 I think.

Dave, what plans do you have for the cruise control buttons?

nope, '79-8x was splines, after that it changed to a mostly-round thing with two flat sides. Early ones are retained by nuts, later ones by bolts.
