    Quick Question About Hi-Temp Paint?

    I just sprayed the tails on the CV with Ford Blue regular hi-temp paint (the stuff that is good for 500*F). Is this stuff like the really hi-temp paint (1500*F) where you let it cure for an hour then you have to bake it (hence run the car) for twenty minutes? It has been sitting out there for half an hour now and I would like to what the procedure is, since the paint can has no directions, just warnings.

    Ah funk it, too late. I've already settled in and ate something and feeling quite sleepy. I'll start it up tomorrow morning and move it to the front. Perhaps it won't rain tomorrow night and I'll have another shot at painting from the H-pipe back to the beginning of the tails. Then I'll take some time to mask up allof the stuff surrounding the H-pipe and shoot that with the ultrahi-temp paint. Hopefully this will keep this exhaust from rotting out too fast like the Malibu's exhaust did.

      best use the higher temp paint up front. 500 degree stuff is probably going to cook right off.

      If its aluminized pipe, it should hold up OK. If its not, it'll probably rust from the inside more than the ouside.

        That's what I am going to do with the H-pipe because I also have cats on it, so I figured it would run hotter than the rear section of the exhaust. That I need to do on the weekend because I will need more time to mask and block paint spray from laying on some of the things surrounding the H-pipe (trans pan, oxygen sensors, etc...). The exhaust is aluminized and I figured for a few bucks I can slow down the rotting of the exhaust. I had gotten a similar exhaust system for the Malibu from TorqueTech, and it rotted out in four years. Hopefully this will last a little longer than four years. Plus the visible parts are painted blue, so it makes the car look kinda custom.

          My Dad painted a replacement exhaust on my old 92 Grand Am and it stunk forever (months), baking I guess. For directions, you can always try looking up the manufacturer online. What brand are use using?

            It always rots from the inside out. And I've never gotten anything past 4-5 years on any exhaust, painted or unpainted. Kind of a waste of time and effort, but I always give it a fresh coat when I put the next new one on anyway.

              I am using DupliColor, I think. I am at work right now, so after I get home I will check them. My nose must not be working right because I didn't smell anything this morning when I moved the car. From afar, the car looks kinda neat with the blue tail pipes and silver muffs (I didn't paint them). I think it took about a year before the exhaust on the Malibu started not looking like new. Perhaps this will take a little longer. Oh well, we'll see anyways.

                I'm wondering if the paint acts as a sound dampening agent. It just seemed as if the car was a little quieter than normal. Just an observation.

                  heh, most of the exhaust on my '89 CV is about 7 years old...the other part is around 6. No rust...

                    Shoot, in cold weather, mine steams more from the rear wheelwell than from the tailpipe!

                    Witing until I can afford duals before I replace it though.

                    At the risk of starting a war here...what is better, X pipe? or H pipe?

                      I painted my pipes with 1200* grill paint before I assembled everything for the probe. No problems with it other than it showing scratches easy. I was thinking of using it on some headers but after changing plugs once or twice they'd be all scratched up.

                        Duplicolor should be fine. Plastikote is good also, I forget which of the two is supposed to be the better one. Duplicolor has a demo thing on their site for the high-temp/engine paint.

                        I agree with you on the how they rot, my Grand Marquis' muffler has a little annoying rattle in it intermittently and it's like 3 yrs old. However, the Borla exhaust I put on my Grand Am in 2002 still has no rust at all.
