Put the rear window down. Have someone hold the gate halfway down. Take a long extension with a swivel and undo the three bolts. When you take the last bolt out, push in towards the bolt and when you feel he pressure, slowly back the torsion bar towards you. The gate will get heavy when you release the pressure
so make sure the person holding it is strong. Pete

shit i am sorry i missed this post......what wagonman said about the spring......to get the gae and hinge off you need to move the trim in the cargo area out of the way and remove the 8 nuts that are in there

yea i figured just had visions of the spring planting istelf in my forehead.... i know about the bolts on the car juts had my concerns about that damn spring and getting it appart and back together safely
easy as pie got the new hinge in andd all lined up in less than 2 hours... there is no tension on the torsion spring when the door is in the door position opposed to the gate position.. thanks for the guidance. this task was alot easier than it looked.
it actually opens both ways without hours of fiddling and tweaking? Did you actually manage to source a hinge that wasn't all worn out and floppy from somewhere? If so, I want your source

it took about 15 mins to fine tune it so it swings both ways. only hitch up is the damn rubber filler on the bumper is gone all wavey and is a catching the bottom of the gate. i will have to find a new one...can remember if i still have a spare. as for the hinge....i have horse shoes in my ass or something... my derby buddy has a wagon thats is pretty well fuct. the gate was bent, rusted, beat, seized, etc. and it had a brand new hinge on it, payed $0 for the hinge.
amazing. Scott and I fooled with the gate on Yucatec's wagon for probably an hour and a half before getting a comprimise that worked both ways. Its not real smooth either way, but it was either party mode worked perfect and it wouldn't swing open, or door mode worked and it wouldn't flop down to party mode. The lower hinge on that one is kind of shot, and there hasn't been any luck finding one that was really any better.
Where did your friend get the new hinge, and was this recent? I think Scott checked with Bill from Team Ford, and he said there weren't any hinges in the system anywhere.

LOL party mode i like that..... my buddy bill derbys the fords and had a wagon that happened to have a new hinge on it. i had a second set of hands which made it easy. i had the same issue as you with it working oneway and not the other. just happened that i made a slight adjustment on the top hinge and it worked perfectly.
