That dashed mesh grille material .....

Maybe I've gotten weak or psychotic, but I'm really thinking that both of the following images from the Cougar site CoolCats.net are pretty cool:

.... so I've been playing with the idea of modifying an extra (poor condition) grille I have laying around. But I have no idea where to get the mesh stuff. A nearby AutoZone says they usually carry some, but they're out of stock at present. Looks like 8" absolute minimum by about 29" should be plenty, though I'm undecided on what style should be used (though probably not Bow Ties or flames). Of course, cheapness is imperative.

Thoughts, helpful suggestions, or random snide remarks?

I played around with the idea of a mesh grille for my '89 CV. If I had some black paint, or chrome mesh I would have went with it. Adds something to the front end that I rather like, kinda like an older muscle car feel. Not really ricey either. I'd say our cars are better cadidates for a mesh grille than imports.

Hm... gutter-guard material looks like it's usually only 6" wide ..... there's some 12x24" stuff at Jo-Ann Fabrics ... maybe I'll measure to see if that can work.

I've found websites like this one that have an extensive variety of different mesh fabrics .... where to buy it is still a problem, though. http://www.mechanicalmetals.com/perforatedmetals.html

hm. well, okay, I'll spill ... I've cut the horizontal pieces off my spare grille so it's just the vertical slats and open spaces. Want a picture to play with?

Here it is on a CV grille...I'm not terribly impressed with the look, but I'm not a big fan of mesh grilles in general. Michael, if you want me to do it on your Merc, give me a pic to work with and I'll whip one up for you.

Are you looking for some expanded metal mesh like this stuff.?

Home Depot carries it by the steel and aluminum tubing at the end of the nuts and bolts aisle. I've been eying it up for some grill work myself.
