Go to the good ol' do-it-yourself carwash and use their pressure washer.

That just made me remember the scene in "Christine" when the Fury blew up the gas station and ran down the kid on the highway in flames. I saw that as a kid and looked at cars from a whole new perspective.

I never cover anything when I wash under my hood (which is about half as often as I wash my car). That is why my alternator wigs out for a few minutes after I do a thorough cleaning. My engine bay may look factory, but goddamit I'd eat thanksgiving dinner off of it.

As far as the rubber dist. boot... very good idea. My car used to run like shit after I washed under the bonnet. Since adding the boot (mine didn't come with one) I have had no more problems.

Last time I washed under the hood of the vic she ran fine for about 10 minutes. then I shut her off at the parts store and she wouldn't start back up again for antoher 3 hours no matter what I tried.

I didn't have one either, had to go to the junkyard to get one - well I got two, one's been on the car ever since, the other one is somewhere around too, if I find it it's going on the Chevy cause rain season's coming real soon

Well, I wasn't able to get one at the junkyard. I had to call Late Model Restoration Supply (the mustang people), and pay $15 bucks for one (brand new though). (Go ahead and laugh). Then I paid $15 to ship it. (Once again, go ahead and laugh). Oh well. I had to have the engine bay dazzling, and couldn't deal with a wet dist.

I use purple power on a warm (not really cooking hot) and a light duty electric pressure washer. I don't cover anything, just don't blast the distributor. I also wouldn't suggest using a gas power washer, or setting the pressure washer tip to stream. I set it up so the water sprays in a fan pattern. Let the degreaser sit on there 5-10 minutes and wash it off. If you're doing the whole car, spray the motor with degreaser and let it sit while you wash the rest of the car. If there is still gunk on there, warm the motor up again, and repeat. Personally I dont care for the aerosol degreasers because its just kerosene in a can. I hate my car smelling like a nasty diesel powered truck.

oh, and I'm gonna stick this in detailing since its on topic there.

I never have cleaned/washed an engine before(please dont laugh). i have lots of time know so i'm going to do it. as the title says, what should i cover? i have no pressure washer just the hoze, so its not like i'm going to be washing the heck out of the engine, i just want it to sparkle alittle more then it is know.

                              thanks,
                              Dave
Cover the distributor, also cover the alternator. Would be easier if you took it off. If you have a different aircleaner setup, cover that too. Cover the WOT sensor too. I got that wet and the idle fluctuated for like an hour, until it dried up. That's basically it. Good luck.

Clean the engine by hand or you will mess up all of your electrical conections. No power spray or better yet have a detail shop clean the engine price worth it especilly if thay fuck up the conections.
