I've never used gel before, only spray shine. The spray does drip down onto the wheels, but it just dripped onto the wheel covers, so no loss there.

While we're on the subject of tire cleanup, isn't there a way to brighten up the white part of whitewalls? Does bleach work or is there some kinda whitewall product out there made just for that?

There are products made just for cleaning whitewalls, though I find that soap and water with a good rag usually works pretty well for getting 'em clean. I suppose that if you had some that were really seriously stained, though, it might be more of a problem.

here's my suggestion for ya Dan, I've had some sort of whitewall on both cars I've owned and my dad's Mark V has them of course....
get some of Armor All's Wheel Cleaner...should be a yellow and white bottle and say "triple action" on it.
wet tire...spray on...let sit for like 30 seconds...use tough brissled brush(tire brush, available at store) and scrub a little...hose off....and smile.

Yeah, like Mr.LandYacht said, a brush and some soap or a mild degreaser works on both the tires and wheels. I use this degreaser from Griot's Garage with a brush to clean off the tires. I use dish detergent (because it is pretty mild) to clean the wheels off. After everything is dry I polish the wheels with Mothers Mag Polish and I use Amor All spray dressing on the tires. I try to minimize the the overspray on the wheels by putting a garbage can lid (the round ones of course) over the wheel and hold it close or tight against the lip of the wheel and spray. There will be a little spotting on the wheels but nothing that won't come out with an hour or two of driving. I tried Griot's Garage tire dressing with the applicator that they recommended, but the dressing is black and if you have a doctor's hand you won't avoid getting it on the wheel. Then it is very hard to brush off, even with degreaser.

if anyone gets wax or metal polish on your tires.. wipe down the tire with laquer thinner... it will ruin the rag and stain it black, but it'll make the tires nice and black instead of that shit brown color and it will take off any waxes and polishes
