Well,I won't say that it's necessary, because you could mess around with it all day, taking the door on and off, adjusting the hinges one at a time, basically Trial and Error until you finally stumble onto the correct alignment.I would just say that it's the proper way to do it,(I like to do things the right way, which is usually the hard way).

To do the job properly,The door needs to still be installed on the car with the Striker Pin Removed, then the door held fully closed and the body bolts on the hinges loosened just enough so that they barely move, once the door is lifted/pulled in the desired direction (for Example UP) both hinges will sag a little and must be moved in Unison the exact same distance (Up),taking your time,to keep the geometry of the hinges exactly the same as before.Even a little off and the door will not shut correctly, and will dramatically reduce the life of the Hinge Pins.

My car is very mint as far as being rust free,so it wasn't really much work or annoyance for me to get everything done, even doing the entire disassembly, alignment, and, reassembly by myself.I fixed a few areas where rust was just starting along the way,one was under the front windshield on the Cowl,,glad I caught that before it got worse. From the time I got started to teh finish,I only have 6 Hours in the Project, and that was taking my time to enjoy it as I went,I enjoyed every minute of it too.

Well the second time I adjusted the hinges, I was lucky as shit because the door fit almost perfect, closing perfectly on the striker.

I would never attempt my project again though, because after I closed the door and it was 6 inches lower than it needed to be, I thought I had bit off a little too much (had never done it before). My car, like yours, has no rust, so that made the job easier too.

Trying to think .... there are the two nuts holding the fender to the header panel, two bolts underneath by the rocker panel, the one accessible through the fenderwell, and I think three that you get to from under the hood. Am I missing any?

(if so, maybe that's why the car's been rattley since I changed the fender ....... )

I know what you mean. I have to shut mine hard. I believe that mine are sagging a little bit. Hopefully I never have a problem like this to occur.

Those tudor doors are so large they would definitely take a couple of people to align, and would be a major PITA.
I get cold shiver too when people slam my doors, I adjusted all the strikers so you barely have to push it shut now.
