I am thinking about getting a clay kit, I don't even know how to use it. I have a few spots on my trunk and hood I want to get rid of that I can't seem to get rid of.

Scott, I wasn't planning to blackout the chrome at all...just the red reflective stuff on the bottom section of those tail lights.

Adam, clay kits are TOTALLY worth it!
I'd go with Mothers or Meguiars.
      here's the kit:
      -Clay bar
      -Quick Detailer
-small bottle of carnuba cleaner wax(in Mothers, not sure if Meguiars comes with it)
it has directions, but it's very simple...try to do it on a day not TOO sunny...or do it in the shade/garage.
      -wash and dry car
-spray some of the quik detailer and use clay to spread it around(be sure to use plenty of the detailer)
-use a towel to dry all the detailer off the car and make sure it's all clean...
-then apply Wax...and you know the rest from there.

the clay kit will pull off A LOT of stuff from the paint's surface.
this not only makes the Wax stay on better, but it also gives the paint an INCREDIBLY smooth feel...like glass.
the Mothers kit is about $17..Meguiars should be around the same price...

For the rub strip/door guard, you can brush on some tire silicone. I do that to my bumper gaurds and the door gaurds usually after every other car wash. It just takes a little bit and helps darken them back up or keeps good ones looking that way. The better silicones have a uv filter as well.

            hmm...sounds like a good idea...but what's tire silicone?(pardon my ignorance mang)
is it what I think it is?
i.e., the black tire sealant that goes right between the rim and tire when you put tires on?

btw, thanks Dave! Who needs Zaino when you have Meguiars/Mothers?
I have a friend that detailed his dad's 93 Vette in the Quazar Blue....VERY glossy..but only 1 tini-tiny step from my car.

looking at my hood tho, I think it could have a deeper gloss...not that it isn't outstanding already... but....
but here's why I think it could be better/deeper/more reflective...I guess I'm prolly splitting hairs here.
when Spring first got here and we had a friday with NICE weather, I started the Meguiars 3 Step Process on MAGNA...
I got thru the Paint Cleaner(1) and the Polish(2) before I got really worn out an dhad to stop...the polish was REALLY tough to get off, even though I put really small amounts of it on(about 2-3 drops on 1/3 of the hood or on a fender/door, etc)
later that day(after I took a 30min breather), it rained...
and for about 2 weeks or so I didn't clean and Wax the car.
and with that 3 Step Process, if you don't use the Wax(step 3), it doesn't "seal" on the shine...it just kinda cleans it and then leaves it wide open for more dirt/grime to come right back on...:nonono:
the hood seems to be the only section that is noticeably different from the rest of the car in terms of gloss...
I mean, lol...just look at the fenders and doors!
but I think I'll give it a little test: I'll use some cleaner, then polish, then wax on a small section of the hood and see if I can see any difference in glossiness..if I do, I'll do the whole hood...whew...enough talk.

              glossy enough?

              whatcha think?
              is the shine deep enough?
I used Paint Cleaner, Polish and then Wax on the hood...I think it DID make a difference...shine is a little deeper...

No worries, the type of silicone I was referring to was the kind many people use to dress/detail the tire sidewalls. A lot of people use sprays, gels, but I find it's much cheaper and easier to buy the silicone dressing in the big bottle. I put it in a clean coffee can with a smaller clean paint brush to apply to tires, plastic and rubber trim, and weatherstripping. Some people even use it on the chrome parts as well.

Exactly, just try and get the pure silicone stuff with a uv filter to help protect from fade and cracking. I get mine at an autobody supply shop.

hmm..well I'll be damned...I used some of my Armor-All Extreme Shine Tire Shine on it and it seems to have restored them...wow...thanks for the tip!
but the molding on the drivers side of the front bumper still ain't 100%..that's ok tho.
I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow..too dark out now.

Pic whore. It looks good man. Once I get all of my rustfixed and the paint blended/matched, I'll definately be using this as a guideline for my car.

If it's really dried out it may take a few applications like with just tires (soaks it all up first couple of times). It should start to soak in better over the next few days. Just reapply when it starts getting dull again after your regular washes. Your car really does look great, makes me want to get mine repainted so I can stop stairing at the pink primer on my hood.

thanks for the compliment dude..much appreciated.
yea, I was thinking a few days and a few more coats of that stuff should fix it.

I'll have to get some pics of where the primer is showing. It's mainly the two hood creases where the pinstripping usually is. I'll prob touch it up with a rattle can like my roof and trunk to prevent rust. I really want to get it repainted, but I hate bad bodywork so I'm saving and till I can afford a good job. I want the car totally stripped and repainted, a full restoration.
