i was wondering what Baby would look like with a Black fabric half top. i noticed recently she has develpoed rust above the back window under the vinyl. her vinyl is cracked pretty bad and was wondering what you guys would think if i had a black fabric half top? i think it would look good with the light metallic blue color she is. either Black or a Light Blue color for her top. any suggestions? think of 1987LTDMasta's car before it was painted black. i wanna keep Baby looking classy, but not overdone with covers over the wheels. this car isnt worth alot since she has a revious salvage title, so i wanna keep her looking good. any ideas are apreciated. i dont wanna go slick top, but if i did, i was thinking painting where the vinyl is a black with light blue metallic marble look.

Anything other than a slick top is going to rust the roof and rear fenders. I've seen it happen too many times to like vinyl tops. If I could make my Lincoln a slick top, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I HATE RUST.

well, if i were to make it a slick top, i would paint the top where the vinyl is. it would be painted a black with light blue metallic marble look to it. i was also wondering if a GM chrome piece would work on the car so i can have the opera lights on the sides. just an idea. i want classy not a hot rod look to Baby. Deuce would get the race look with no vinyl and painted all the same color.

Ah Vinyl,A subject I could rant on for days about.
Personally I love the look of vinyl tops on these cars,to me It just gives the car a much classier luxury car look, which is what I'm going for on my 87.I plan on having the vinyl on my Coach Roof replaced with new gloss black vinyl at some point in the future, when I can find someone with a good rep who I know will do a good job.
My main qualm with doing away with my coach roof vinyl top, would be having to downgrade to the large rear window of the regular models.I absolutely despise large rear windows on any vehicle.Even the smaller coach roof rear window isn't small enough for me,Ideally I would like to take the very small rear window out of the towncar limo and mold it into the fiberglass shell of my coach roof, and then have the vinyl redone to match the smaller window.
The Vinyl tops on these cars are known for being very well glued down, and very few have been known to rust under an uncracked top.
Now with that said, the bad side of vinyl roofs. On my 85 Caddy Eldorado Tudor, which I am doing the slicktop conversion to.Under the vinyl top they used a mat of black low density foam, which was not very well glued down at all,and was known to come loose at some points causing rust to form. After I had ripped off the vinyl,I found that the mat had come loose right at the roof/sail panel seam, allowing moisture to penetrate and completely rust out the roof seam on both sides. It's gonna be a pain in the ass to fix properly.
If it where mine I would rip off your current vinyl top,to be able to fix the rust forming under it,and then have it replaced with new vinyl of your color choice, but that's just me,most people don't like vinyl on cars.

I agree. The large windows suck! I dunno about making them smaller, I see the appeal, but I also like to be able to see who's behind me. So I like the stock coach.
Given the age of our cars, it seems to me that unless your vinyl is in perfect condition, you should strip it off, repair any rust, and get a new one put on.
